Discussion What is heaven in chinese novels?

People go against the heaven, seal the heaven, devour the heaven, swallow the heaven, burn the heaven, have battle through the heaven, defying the heaven...
Heaven also gives heavenly tribulation, heaven's will, heavenly calamity, and so on..
So my question is, what kind of place are heaven portrayed in chinese novels? Is it a living being that have its own characteristic? Hmm..

 

A place so high that people need to crack their neck to look at?
Idk, but when i read some xianxia that have heaven depiction, i think it was a place so high that a normal human can't look and reach at. If you want to go there, you need to defy the heaven itself by doing something unbelievable... or something similar...

In the beginning I used to think heavens they were mentioning was like 'sky'. Then gradually I came to feel that heavens mentioned in Chinese novels were the 'LAWS' and 'Restrictions' of the universe. While cultivating people go against the Law of Mortality, while Teleporting they break LAW of space, while they 'ascend to higher plane' they have overcome the restriction that keeps them to Mortal Plane and so on and on...

Heaven is the Place Outside the Nirvana Cycle.

 

Heaven is a limit. I think that is the simplest explanation you csn get. A limit. People in xianxia fight against their limits and constraints.

 

"the Heavens" are basically what rule us. The laws everyone have to obey. Saying it's alive isn't... really quite right, I never felt. It's something like fate, natural laws and divine will all wrapped up in one.

 

Heaven as in Tian should be the limit of everything, and also the force of everything. Heaven's will would be like destiny or luck I think.

This cycle can be broken after a soul achieves Moksha or Nirvana. Any place of existence, either of humans, souls or deities, outside the tangible world (Heaven, Hell, or other) is referred to as otherworld.

As far I can say.. Some place will define heaven as ...

• Another world/realm
• Different dimension
• It exist within this realm but unaccessible
• The center of galaxy/universe
• The highest realm you may go

The Chinese concepts of heaven, gods and demons are actually quite mundane. All these supernatural beings are human-like in behavior, the only difference is that they have superpowers and living on another realm of existence. That is why we have many fantastical stories about gods and demons acting out in tantrums when something bad happens and having the same desires as we do. It's just on a higher level of cosmic bureaucracy.
