It isn't really that helpful to divide them just into western and eastern dragons, there can be large differences between western dragons alone depending on the specific culture, for example Norse mythology include wingless serpentine dragons as well.

At least most of the biblical dragons are as agressive, murderous, stupidely pridefull and virgin obsessed than any CN MC :blobpopcorn_cool:
Greed is for Norse dragons and thoses in modern fantasy...

eastern dragon is symbol of protection & blessing while western dragon is symbol of fear and disaster, or at least that's what people in ancient times believed

Many dragons in Greek myth were simply snake-like.

But aren't there like dragons in Australia?

These are still alive, unlike those hunted by Europeans. Too bad the Dark Ages, killed those guys off.

they live in Indonesia though, not in Australia...

well, I think eastern dragons are different from the western counterpart...
maybe they called dragon because western people are told about the tales of "flying reptiles", and for western people flying reptiles=dragons...

Well it is like you mentioned. A lot of Western type dragons are more winged reptillians, vs Eastern type which are serpentine.

    1. They are not two types of lizard. They are two types of reptiles. Western dragons are lizards, eastern dragons are serpents.
    2. While western dragons commonly spat fire, eastern dragons aren't normally depicted as breathing fire. Some spat water. In many instances, there was no mention at all of their capability to breathe fire. The Vietnamese (or is that Thai?) dragon is portrayed as staying in the river and firing three fireballs every year. The Malaysian Chini Lake dragon was not depicted as being able to breathe fire, but able to control rain and thunderstorms and also supposedly cause disease to those who encounter it.
    3. Not necessarily, for either west and east. Eastern dragons do not need wings to glide in the sky, but there are dragons depicted as having wings.
    4. Beards aren't necessarily a description of eastern dragons. The more popular Chinese dragons have beards because of their very role in the cosmos.
    5. No idea. Different dragons have different descriptions.

Because eastern dragons are also sages, dragons that have lived so long and been so wise they receive the status of gods or ancestors. In comparison, western dragons are commonly depicted as dumb, hoarder antagonist that lives only to burn villages, eat humans and hoard gold. When you compare a battle between a smart, godlike dragon and a dumb, animal-like dragon, you already know who will win.

I'm more curious why almost every culture in the world have the same legends and tales about giant serpent/lizard that can breath fire

    This here is my opinion:
I would think that the seafaring ancestors of some countries would be part of why... going from place to place, trading, pillaging etc, tales would have been exchanged... more than likely exagerated...
i think the very same countries have plentiful of myths that are more detailed and stuff...

An example of something that can be exagerated that I can remember are bites filled with hemotoxin...
Hemotoxin, if the term is broken down is a toxin that attacks the blood... and the effects are ghastly... google it if you want... the resulting injuries would hurt like a burn and some even do turn black almost like burnt wood... so that can be the so called 'fire' that comes from a reptile's mouth...

Flying is easy, we still have a specie of flying lizard living in the world...

And if that isn't enough, people probably found 'dragon bones' a lot back then... these, we call dinosaurs nowadays so yeah...

    Sorry if i rambled... :blobcheeky:

Dragons in various cultures are not native to the planet Earth.

And those cultures which consider Dragons to be divine beings or creatures from the heavens can also interpret them as and Advanced Alien culture that influence hoomans.

Western dragons tend to be malevolent while eastern tend to be benevolent.
