I guess for christians, if the "entity" in question was Jesus then its god and if not, then not.. and for muslims its a question of whether that one guy was the prophet of the "entity" in question or not.. and similar for other religions..? But if we are talking fictional stories and fictional gods and stuff.. then what properties would an "entity" have to have to qualify as "god" in your opinion, and not just powerful being ?
Faith. As seen on earth, as long as enough people believe in something that they consider a god, it is a god, and it's fairly often the same in fantasy, many fantasy gods even get power from faith, and faith being the last ''breakthrough'' from strong af to god
I think a God is more like a symbol of faith. A personification of hope. A god has to have believers. In terms of fiction, they say that the power of god comes from the people's faith. There are also stories about how the Gods are the ones to save their believers. So maybe a God also have to show miracles?
Simply invincible against creatures whose tiers are below it. So no bullshit like a god that was slain by humans or demigod wielding godly artifact. They can be killed by their fellow god though, and their strength differences stemmed from mortal's faith.
As far as i can tell there are three Mayor ways in fantasy to define a god. 1 - An Entity that is defined by Faith. In this case it doesnt matter if this entity is "real", as it becomes real by the faith. 2 - An Entity that reigns over something fundamental in the world. Like a god that reigns over weather, light, reincarnation, etc. 3 - A state of a living beeing that gained enligtnment or a next level of beeing by, training, meditation, a ritual, and/or something different. Hope this was helpful EDIT: 4 - A living beeing/race that declares themselfs as god. In fantasy scenarios, they might be an alien race, that enslaved another world and declares themself as god. They are usually depicted very powerfull aswell, but are actually no deity. So to summarize. In a fantasy scenario you can be god by - Faith - Administrating Fundamentals - Ascension (- Declaration)
I suppose, from "realistic fantasy" point of view, a god would be an entity that can ignore the principles of "cause and effect", while other supernatural stuff would still obey stuff like conservation of energy.
Gods are typically personifications of concepts(such as good and evil) or forces of nature. Even in monotheistic religions the god is more or less the personification of the world/universe/existence.
So many childish replies on a serious topic like this. The most basic definition of God is omnipotence, omniscience and omnipresence. There are many other attributes, but these three are universally accepted.
I personally think that people just need someone to rely on in desperate and down moments of life. The thing that can make them feel hope and not feeling alone. That's God for me.
If we're talking about fictional god then I'd like them to be able to do stuff that mortals just can't. Perhaps some form of immortality that makes it a huge pain to kill them.
What's this all about? To be honest here if there is a god. We would normally think they are Immortal, omnopotent and omnipresence. Someone who controls fate. Has great plans or what not. Its sometimes a great person who people deified in the past an became god. To be honest I just think all of those are made up. Too many stories that differ in other religions. And science proving this stuff. So yeah.
