In the past when I was 17 my mom told me about hei gung and something about breathing to the dantian. Hei gung is Cantonese and I believe it translates into "breath/air work" literally.

I tried it back then since I had breathing problems and wasn't feeling well. Maybe because I went to bed too late all the time, I'm not sure. She said that it's important to let go of all thoughts, thinking of nothing and solely concentrating on breathing. I liked it sitting straight like a javelin and just breathing, it felt good and after a while I felt random thoughts connecting spontaneously.

But I stopped doing that, because I lost motivation long ago, only trying it from time to time when I had nothing to do anyway.

Oftentimes I spend ours wasting time on meaningless things, might as well have meditated instead of raged online against some other entitled kids.

Recently I saw this video of a German youtuber who often times does things for a week, like not eating sugar for a week or interesting other stuff and then I stumbled upon this video.

Honestly the man gave me a lot of motivation, seeing another human meditate for an hour everyday was cool and since he could do it, I guess it's doable. So I wanted to try it too. He not only does it but explains to the best of his abilities and according to his online research on it. I felt like the things he said were really true.

I once had a junior who I had to show the work at the hospital. We were just doing the cleaning stuff. That guy was more spiritual and liked meditating it was really cool.

So we or most of us here have read cultivation novels. I think I can refer to that, because sometimes in cultivation novels I think they do meditate and I think it's cool. Anyway, did you try meditating before? Or is it too boring for you. You should try it, it's not hard, you literally do nothing and breath and relax

And that, sir, is the hardest thing to do. Funny thing is, I too love the meditation/Dao contemplation arcs in xianxia, but I can't seem to get rid of the need for constant stimulation. :blobsad:

I did deep breathing exercise, not meditation, but yeah, the notion of not thinking about the burning world is good for yoir psyche.

Then my mind drifts to porn and I started wanking.

Isn't meditation about clearing your mind from "noise" created by random thoughts?
Anyway, I don't meditate much, but I did a little in the past and it helped me to understand my emotional states better. Like when I'm angry and trashtalk I realise that I have this emotional state and can stop behaving in this way.

Don't get rid. Concentrate on your breathing and be a passive listener to whatever thoughts appear in your mind. Avoid starting thinking actively about things though. Your attention should be on the air that moves in and out

    Meditating.. huh..
It will give you many benefits as i tried it in the past like what you said thats how i felt while i did it. Also my geandparents and parents said it will only do good to you. Isnt that what Budha always did then being enlightened? But its really BORING!! And if you have no PATIENCE then its useless.

To change your mindset. I think that's the main ingredient.

Seriousness aside, here's a fun watch:

But I can't concentrate like that! I lose patience fast. I can only concentrate on work, reading, sports, etc, bcuz in all those cases my mind and/or body are actively engaged.

I think it's great for relaxation, and I think I succeeded in doing it once, but I found napping to be more convenient. Meditation requires effort, I mean, and napping doesn't. Or it doesn't require physical effort. The funny thing about meditation is how you relax your mind but move your body. The difficult part is definitely being consistent with your breathing. I mean your thoughts can interrupt it, but once you have a rhythm with your breathing, it kind of interrupts your thoughts. The breathing, that is. I can't explain it.

You literally don't need to do the whole sitting absolutely still and breathing in cycle for mental benefits, all you need to do is just empty out your head of all thought temporarily.

I used to try that because I got into xianxia, but noticed it doesn't really differ from completely blanking out which I can do whenever doing whatever, at will.

Focusing on the breathing allows you to let go of thought and ignore minor feelings like holding your eyelids closed, or that your tongue has weight. Being in the prober posture helps you eliminate most other sensations like clothes chafing your skin and minor discomfort caused by gravity.

As for the perks, you stress less, you can more or less instantly drop anxiety(if you stop meditation too quickly it will come right back), it can help you organize your thoughts, you might notice things physically wrong with your body if you get bored enough through the minor discomforts pulling you out.

As for more physical effects, above things with stress and anxiety can slightly slow down aging, you might be able to sleep better, you won't tire as fast when you meditate to counteract duress.

On the downside doing it wrong can leave you in sleep paralysis-like state which is a big can of worms.

Breathing. We do it unconsciously all the time. Just sitting quietly and breathing consciously itself is a form of meditation.
I had chronic cold in the morning but I did 'Pranayam' Indian way of breathing exercises I got better in 6 months. So if you want to do any breathing exercises you have to do it continuously for months.
I don't do it anymore but I m still fine
    Hope this helps.

You really need some "off time" when you start working or you'll really end up killing the people at work.
In some jobs, "off time" is not a luxury, it's a necessity.

I like how you're honest. I believe you've reached a high level in the Dao of Yanking, my fellow Daoist.

Breathing's for health. Needs discipline. Leads to partial stability.
Meditation's for stability. Needs tempered ego. Or non egoistic character. Quite impossible for modern people.
