It gets taken down (not like forcefully they do it, but they tell you to take it down and you can’t say no) and possible lawsuit.

The probability of that happening rises proportionally to the popularity of the novel.

If it's has low views, they probably won't bother. If it gets popular, they will probably offer you a contract to tl for them and if you refuse they will probably copy all the work you did and hit you with a dmca request to take down then get someone else to tl on their own site.

They would copy it and host it on their site treating it as a free translator working for them.

The aggregators get away with it. Quite honestly as long as you're under the radar and don't seem to be earning too much I doubt they'd care.

To be honest the best people to respond to this are the friends from Wuxiaworld... they are alive and well.

Nothing much unless it is a popular novel. But if you were going to translate a novel going forward, I would refrain from doing so.

They would do nothing until they see you have garnered a worthwhile following then they would bring you into their fold or take the novel and find a new translator for it.

If you're in a country with a functioning law system, they'll first offer you an incredibly bad job (~$5/chapter) you can't refuse, and if you do, sue you until you lose your cash, hand everything over, and give up. If you live someplace with corrupt law enforcement, you will either get the above, or get ignored if too difficult to get to you. Odds of a 'personal visit' is pretty low, but the closer you are to the asian pacific area, the more it becomes possible.

Also, all of the above depends on them knowing who and where you are. If you pay attention to privacy and hosting, you can avoid all this mess. Hosting in the US means DMCA takedowns are easy. Hosting in Romania or Panama means it's much more difficult to shut you down. If you hide your identity well enough, as well, they won't even bother with you once they discover you can't be tracked easily. Don't be low hanging fruit.

    Meeh.. Nothing
If the novel was popular they would already be translating it.
I see that they are now focusing on ongoing novels instead of old classics like Coiling Dragon.
