    It completely depends on your TL speed. But for a CN novel, stockpile at least 50 chapters if you plan to release daily I would say. You could have slightly less based on your release frequency. If you plan to release like 3 chapters a week, then maybe 20 something at least? Essentially this allows you to always release on time for the first few weeks to get readers interested and no-one dropping the novel due to irregular release speeds.

    If you TL like 2 chapters a day, then it'll take you less than 2 weeks to get 20 something chapters done.

    Then I suggest a stock of 35 or so.

    I personally think if there's a series that is stagnating due to lack of releases and you want to pick it up it's fine to ask if they wouldn't mind if you joining them. Asking to take over is kind of a touchy subject but offering to help/join them isn't so bad although some people might take offence.
