Who pays for mantaining the forum and site?

    Just a small curiosioty how does Tony (that i discovered today is the creator and a MEME of this site) if he is the one that pays to maintain the forum and how much does it cost?

    And how does he pay it? Is there some sort of donation/subscription?

    Is it expensive to run a site?

    Because i don't see any ads - NVM i'm often on mobile

    There is ads on NU, I occasionally click on it so that my man Tony can eat. I just clicked now, that's for his breakfast(or dinner or lunch, I don't know his time zone).

    I see ads on NU. I'm not sure what is and how much is necessary to run a site but it seems to be enough for now. Tony is still bidding their time before world domination.

    As far as I know, Novel Updates supports the forum through its ad revenue. The forum itself is separate and makes no money. I don't know the specific costs, but the servers for both the main site and the forums have had to be upgraded numerous times due to @AliceShiki's spamming, so you can freely imagine it not being cheap.

    I remember making a forum for fun and it didn't cost me anything.

    EDIT: Maybe IIf upgraded it will cost .

    It's the advertisements you see on NU which is paying for both NU and NUF

    It's different. You're referring to those free forum hosting which is free for a reason.

    Just as an example, can you create a forum like NUF for free? Hosting isn't free and NUF is using the software from https://xenforo.com/. To be fair, NUF doesn't cost no where near NU so that's one of the reasons why I don't have ads on the forum. Plus, who wants to see advertisements while they are trolling?! Basically, NU is NUF's sugar daddy :blob_teary:

    NU can sustain both itself and NUF through the ads on NU. NU has a pretty large traffic and it's more than enough to sustain the costs.

    As for how expensive it is... It depends a lot on how big the site is, and how many things happen in the background... NU in particular is more expensive than you imagine, Tony once shared the numbers with me back in 2017 IIRC and I was astounded.

    So... If you can remove your ad blocker from NU, it would be always be a good idea~
    NUF is run in its own domain, so that's an expense. Then it also has its own server, that's another expense. Then there is the fact it uses xenforo's software, that's yet another expense.

    There are plenty of ways to make a free forum, but NUF is definitely not free.

    For small forums, there are pleanty of hosts - who will then proceed to datamine your traffic, network your metadata, and push ads for their profit - ergo, you become the stream of revenue.
    For large forums, it can cost anywhere from $50/month to hundreds - even thousands per month, depending largely on bandwidth, since CPU's are pretty cheap. It scales pretty linearly.
