Don't like it when people get what they can't have? :D
JK, sometimes, there are nice things about simple 1 on 1 lovings. Gives a lot more room for character development in some senses.

The severe lack of characterization of harem members then the severe lack of attention the characters receive after they have been "conquered" by the neglectful male lead. Not all harem stories are awful though i prefer to judge on an individual basis.

The harem is fine, what people don't like is how often shitty writing is attached to it. Like, if every harem novel had writing like in Mushoku Tensei...

On the contrary, people do not dislike harem. It is just that a harem story is quite complicated to write well. Most writers end up butchering the story or using it poorly in the story. Thus harem while a genre on its own, also signifies a bad work of the story. Since rarely any literary works does justice to the genre itself.

It would somtimes become a "got to catch them all" sort of thing. Worsen by the fact that they'll fall in love by the simplest of gestures.

The problem with harems is that some of the characters are underused. Also, since they have overlapping characteristics, it's easy to forget who's in the harem when it gets too large. In some of the stories I have read, female characters who have entire story arcs dedicated to them became side characters after joining the harem.

Cause most of the time harems are put together worse than Ash's Pokemon lineup.

I think the biggest reason most ppl hate harem, is because they can't picture someone loving them much less a group of women loving them.

I'd call that bad writing if someone falls in love with a simple gesture in the first few meetings

    Well

Most people in real life would agree, the sex would be great, but the baggage that comes with it is herculean...

When it comes to novels, since it is fantasy of the authors, they would just describe the mc conquest and go on with the main plot. If anyone would put it realistically, the mc would be nagged by his immortal wives and children eternally without the chance to cultivate further....

    Nobody wants to read that...

Some of them are plain idiots. They go to popular novels with harem, not even reading the chapters and they downrate the novel, reason? "Huh... I don't like harems hehe".
The harem genre is clearly on top of the novel yet you're still reading it, are you an idiot? I don't go to NTR novels to downrate them just because I don't like NTR.

    Harems themselves are great.

Most harem stories, however, are varying levels of badly done from 'could have been done better' to 'OHMAGAWDITSSOHORRIBRUBURNWITFIREZ'.

There are good, proper harems out there but not many when compared to the flood of bad harems

Yeah. Especially to spineless, indecisive and donkan protagonist, protag/harem member have no personality and neglected harem member.

Regardless if you're writing a vanilla romance, or a harem there is certain things romance needs if it is to appeal to the readers.
    • Fleshed Out Characters: All major characters should feel real for a story to be believable, this includes romantic interests, how ever many there might be. A lot of times though harems will seek to appeal to certain fetishes, and/or play to a macho power fantasy, leaving you with a lot of shallow two-dimensional characters with no appeal.
    • Relationship Development: For the readers to believe that the romance is genuine they need to see it grow. This is why the whole, starting with animosity is so popular, after all how can their feelings not be genuine if in the beginning they hated each other. Sadly for harems they usually put no effort in developing the relationship, the protagonist is simply irresistibly popular for no discernible reason.
    • Character Interactions: This is pretty obvious, if you want people to buy your character, and their relationship, or relationships they need to have believable interactions. This becomes even more difficult when you have a harem because you need to think how rival love interests will treat each other. Do they have some sort of sisterhood/brotherhood, or are they more competitive? Most of the times harems go with the full submissive route, making the love interests obedient little cock-sleeves/pipe-cleaners that keep their mouth shut until they're needed.
