Question why do people join translation groups?

Why do people join translation groups? I know that everyone in a group has their own project that they work on which is pretty much the same thing as working without a group...

I would assume for thing like pay, support from other translators, editors, etc. Someone else to run the website.

 

If no one would, we wouldn’t be reading a lot of novels right now

 

To share your joys and sorrows with your peers

 

because we can throw salt to each other?

 

Running a site is like rent, do you wanna pay rent by yourself or get a group of buddies and split the cost?

 

The actual reasons vary from person to person, but I can tell you what are some things that make groups attractive:

First of all, you get more viewers on average than you would get if you were to be translating and publishing alone, as it's a shared pool of viewers from all of the translators in a given group instead of just people interested in solely your projects.

Secondly, you can leave some things to others, there are fewer things to worry about, and the more mundane tasks can be divided between people. It's also easy to get help in case you need somebody to help check your translation, or when your editor is sick and you want to have your chapter checked fast.

Thirdly, it's more cheerful in a group!

There are other reasons like money and other benefits, but those might not necessarily apply to all groups.
It's mainly the 3 things I mentioned above. Others are either linked or vary from group to group.

 

Well, I'm not a translator myself but working in a group is easier that working alone you know~ Since if you work in a group, there will be and easier access to help, there will be someone that can check your translation for error (either tlc or proofreading it), you will only need to focus in one place (just translating), and some other...
If you work alone or without a group, you have to look for proofreader yourself, manage the website yourself, well do (almost) everything by yourself... it's doable, but not everyone can do that and it's easier when you don't have to worry about it~

 

To learn? They can work with others and see how things go. Then they can do things on their own if they want

 

For da mulla mulla

 

You admire the translation group's work or the series that they work on. You jump on to help them out or make faster releases.

 

It's got a great support system for new translators! I can ask anyone in the group for TL help with turns of phrase, or emergency edits if my own editor's MIA. Moreover, it's easier to get licenses for raws in a group company and host events for stuff like holiday bonus chapters.

I like making new friends with my fellow TLers/editors too. ^-^

 

But that's the thing, people work on their own projects. It's not 5 people working together to get 1 book out, it's 5 people each working on 5 different books

 

Aside from what ruyi and zaernon said, which I completely agree to, I think cough knowing fellows suffering the same stuff as you is good, mentally.

 

It's rare to find people working on projects alone nowadays. It basically only happens when there are new translators entering the community, or when a completely new project is picked up. Most of the time there are at least 2 people working on one project, with up to 5, or sometimes even more of them.

Aside from Translators there are also Editors, Proofreaders, and Translation Checkers

I mean I panick if I work with other people. I know I'd do things faster and better if I did, but yeah, anxiety is my only companion nowadays. I wouldn't like to anger her by working with other people.

I do request help when I need it, and it would be great to work in a group but yeah... it's not within my capabilities atm.
