Question Why is there always this sign “!” After someone says a sentence?

Seriously I see it in many translated novels. I’d get it if the person speaking was yelling but even if the characters are said to be talking gently and calm most of the time there is an exclamation mark. Why is that?

 

It doesn't always mean yelling, it can mean other aspects of emotions depending on the context like sometimes it can mean excitement or shock or even surprise

 

Is it Chinese? If so, it's most likely for intonation. Example: "And then, he jumped out of the closet" vs "And then! He jumped out of the closet!" It's to show a soft raise in tone. The first is usually read in a calm way as if things happened. No big deal. The second shows shock or emphasis. Chinese webnovels are filled with such things as it's all written colloquially.

 

I somehow i think it's a bad case of bad translation or error by author.

 

Just editors or translators being lazy. These things should be removed and replaced with periods or question marks as they’re used excessively. Another quirk of translated novels that shouldn’t transfer over to English are the excessive dots everywhere like ..........

 

I, your Father!!

 

for me the dots thing is interesting, keeping the taste of original language.
