I don't think the trump card would bridge the gap between him and the Pope. Maybe Hurt, though, if he does end up fighting him instead. ... As far as the Pope tracking him goes, it's hard to say whether she'd be able to do that, and it's even harder to say whether she would be willing to actually go after him. She might be the strongest professionist on Earth, but it's not by such a huge margin she can take on the entire Confederate military, methinks.

I wonder if he'd have kept his word and worked for her if she truthfully answered all his questions. It'd certainly have put Anna in a spot. :blobrofl:

I mean, the warp device has a self-destruct function and is already ready to warp (finished charging energy). Probably something like fake suicide bombing will work?

From the title of the chapter, I think he wouldn't have, it's just him checking out her intentions.

My understanding of what he knows about the Pope is.... Literally nothing. She betrayed Anna's father, sure, but she also did... nothing. She didn't fight the apocalypse, she was never defeated when Anna rebelled the first time (she only reclaimed a portion of the empire, IIRC), and she just... disappeared one day. So he knows literally jack all about her motives.

To me, it sounds like she's ultimately just trying to ditch or betray humanity, but she could have been literally anything. I wonder what he would have done if she turned out to be secretly fighting the invasion her own way, or something else that would appeal to him.

Either the emperor is forgetting that the MC leaving his country for Anna doesn't mean that he'll join Fuxi, or he already thinks of Anna's country as his subordinate state and Anna should be quite offended (not that she should show it of course).

He should definitely pick the stun. The travel power isn't likely to be better than Ground Shrink and I've already forgotten the last option, presumably due to it not even being a real contender.

At this point, all the emperor knows is that MC is an under-appreciated scientist (by his standards), while Anna is someone who needs to depend on him to even remain safe from pursuit and still need his help to regain her country. He basically holds all the initiative so his thought process is quite understandable.

Oh please. Letting go of the 1.5 billion is sooo generous. If you ignore or completely forget that A) it's undoubtedly a MASSIVELY TITANIC STUPENDOUSLY INSANE markup over the production price, and B) he just handed over an absolutely priceless piece of technology that bumped your entire Empire's mech science up by at least several years and possibly quite a bit more. In the middle of a literal fucking apocalypse, in fact, which makes the advancement all the more valuable.

    Pfffft.

Anyway, I don't see why he couldn't move to Fuxi. It doesn't really matter. I mean, the confederate isn't exactly a fondly remembered home to him, and ultimately neither place is particularly important in the grand scheme of things. His goals are a bit higher in the long run than just peacefully living on Earth. So.. He can hang out in Fuxi for awhile, sure?

Ofc, right now, there's the impartial goddess and her resources at his full disposal in the confederate, and the fact that he's essentially the highest authority in the country at this point; I'm sure the goddess wouldn't mind if he casually off'd the nine lords, to say nothing of doing things without their permission. I doubt the emperor would let him take charge of the empire, lol. In the long run, though, I think he could find time to spend in the empire.

The biggest sticking point would be that the emperor probably wants a long-term subordinate and that's not gonna happen. I guess he can casually repay any investments the emperor makes in him ten times over anyway, though, in science, cultivation techniques, or physical assistance. So the emperor won't lose out even if he never stays in the country. No biggie.
Disagree. CC is great, but it fails when you really need it to work - on enemies that are especially powerful. Who cares if it works on the trash mobs. ... Self-buffs, on the other hand, are always reliable. I know the system emphasized that it's supposed to work on everyone, "under normal circumstances", but how much should he trust that?

Besides, even if you see the speed boost as mediocre, he also has to look at it from an evolution path perspective. "Potential Enhancement" could lead to further self-buffs, whereas "Stiff" could lead to further CC. Surely this won't be the final evolution of his Lightning, and surely the chosen evolution now will impact future choices?

Surprised he didn't get some kind of self-healing option. "Life", after all. He can have The Flash's accelerated healing, heh.

So, if he was so concerned about his friend's ears, then why didn't he ask IG to suspend his hunting activities, or better yet, make him that serum several days ago right after he got the recipe? Heck, why didn't IG make the serum even without being told? Is she a strategic super computer or not?

Guess he disagreed with me, lol.

The game screwed up. $10 they use the ring to invade it somehow. "Here's an item that lets you reach the arena, Mr. Clown."

    ...

There's a comment on the latest chapter that suggests the 9 Lord's secret has something to do with the demon invasion. That's... unexpected. But it would explain why she suddenly called him to warn him about the game of eternal. Alternate explanations: Given the "old face" the drone saw, maybe some old powerhouse is living there and plans to join the game, so she's warning him off. Or she saw the clown's announcement again and suddenly wanted to warn him because of that. ... Idk, seems weak. Them knowing something about the invasion fits well. ... On the other hand, doesn't really explain their failure to properly respond to it. If they really know about it, then they know humanity needs to defend itself with everything it has and more. They're.. not doing that.

Well, from the newest chapters, we know that the 99% purity serums have a really short shelf-life and costs a bunch of money (half of MC's merits for the one owned by the Confederate, despite not being at marked-up price). I think it's reasonable to believe that the Holy Empire's and Fuxi's serums would also cost about the same amount just to make.

Also, usually the value of something is dependent on the one on the receiving end, not the giving end. Just like how the Bai Hua pills are worth a lot because of how hard it is to get them, rather than how much it costs to make them.

As for IG suspending Ye Fei Li's hunting activities, i think that's just overconfidence on her part and MC being more concerned with his own safety. Liao Xing said it himself, no Man Killer Fiend should have been able to do him in.

I wonder if he's manifesting the same skill as the pope, and if so, how she and the church will react when they find out.

Originally, I was thinking the Nine were serving the demons, but demons don't travel by space ship. So now I'm thinking they might be refugees from a planet destroyed by the demons. If so though, then I wonder why there's no mention of them disappearing in the MC's last life. Is there ship no longer capable of allowing them to flee or something?
That's just for the 99% version. There's no need to insist on that for the MKF.

There was no practical need to, yes. But i remember MC promising to give one to Ye Fei Li as well, unless i'm wrong, in which case that's just really poor planning.

On the other hand, MC apparently still thinks of him as a valuable specimen for scientific research, so it might just be that he wanted to use the best thing possible for the highest rate of success?

A third theory, this one is just a guess since i've no idea what the recipe for the serum might be like, but in real life Chemistry, sometimes it's cheaper to make double the amount of chemical needed in one batch, rather than making the same amount in two batches. It might be the case here as well.

I take it her ancestor doesn't know about cultivation, or isn't willing to admit it if she does.

I wonder if the author realises how heavily this conflicts with previous chapters, namely those concerning warp technology.

It definitely seems like she's clueless. On the other hand, the author went through all the trouble of having her place her belongings on a table at the end of the chapter. Namely, the pills and small book that she was given. I can't help but feel like we're going to see something related to them in the next chapter. ... Maybe the old gal will react to them. Maybe her power will. Who knows.

Ofc, I also feel like all this pomp and circumstance is pointless. Who cares about the old windbag from another planet or the nine lords. Read the damn book and learn to cultivate already. Leave all this nonsense behind.

Also, + more points to the absolute incompetence of the nine lords. If they clearly know this is the literal fucking apocalypse, they're not doing ANYTHING about it. And say what you will about the early stages being "thunder in a barrel", the game of eternal killed a hell of a lot of people the first go 'round. What is their ultimate plan? To flee again? Is that why they don't seem too concerned?

    ________________________

What are the actual conflicts? It's important to remember that all of this is a secret among the nine lords - not even their own children know anything about any of this. So I'm not sure this conflicts with anything previously mentioned in the story, as all of that would have been general knowledge.

Yeah, at the moment I'm just hoping she won't try to steal the book and gift its contents to other eight lords. Not that it would matter in the long run since the MC plans to make it public knowledge, but still.
I feel the same way, but I have to keep reminding myself that she doesn't actually understand what the book is because he never took the time to properly explain it to her. Of course, he didn't know he'd need to explain beyond whatever explanation was in the book and may have wanted it to be something she discovered for herself as she cultivated as some sort of pleasant surprise. She also probably wouldn't have truly understood what it was until she'd cultivated it herself or had it shown to her like he did with Anna.
I have to assume that that's what it is, but if it were, then the MC would definitely know about it. Them leaving would let all the space monsters in after all. It'd be super hard to miss the ship leaving or the space monsters attacking, not to mention the mass immigration of all the noble's chosen followers to their ship. They wouldn't want to have to actually do things for themselves after all, and there's certainly enough room.
Re-read the meeting where the Nine decide to kill the MC. In it, they mention not knowing about the existence of space monsters. It's also mentioned before then, but that's the most blatant conflict since they're talking amongst themselves without any outsiders.

Its possible that IG herself could also be seen as a conflict since she was heavily implied to be a relatively new development in the history of the nation, but they'd have been able to make her from day one and would have had every reason to do so.

There's also the issue of: What happens when a lord dies without an heir close by to pass the power to? You can't even get near the ancestor without the power. Are they able to extract it from the corpse? If so, then what about when there is no corpse? Does the ancestor actually leave the ship? Do they escort whoever they chose up there and explain things to her? Do they suddenly become the Eight? And what if they're not dead, but kidnapped in order to nullify their threat to the planet since they won't be able to kill everyone without all nine there to release the kill switch? Can the ancestor do it on her own? If so, why even have that switch?

And of course, there's the question of "Wtf does the ancestor do with her time?" She's eternal, probably can't cultivate, and doesn't seem to ever leave the excessively large ship that contains no one but her (as far as we know). Wouldn't she go crazy from not having anyone to talk to? Even if there are AIs on par with IG, they wouldn't be very good company since they'd all still be like she was before she met the MC. Is she secretly an internet addict? Is she one of those whales keeping F2P MMOs going? ;)

Though, those last two issues aren't really conflicts so much as they are unanswered questions that continually distract me from the story.

My interpretation of that was simply that they can't. Her grandfather died only after passing the power over, and I feel like its been heavily implied, if not outright stated, that the power is capable of sustaining their life. I don't know how absolute that is, ofc - I suspect they could still be directly killed in a physical confrontation - but it's actually quite possible that they're rarely, if ever, involved in any. Err. The rough equivalent would be asking if the President gets into many fights. Probably not, right? ... so the power prevents them from dying from illness, age or most accidents, and a lack of assassination means they likely very rarely, if ever, have difficulty passing their power along the regular way.

Ofc there are no absolutes. So in the case one does die... Yeah, I assume the power is retrieved from the corpse or something.

    ....

No comment on the ancestor's pastimes.

That would be.. chapter 74? They never say they weren't aware of the space monsters.

    https://otakutl.blogspot.com/2019/08/wao-chapter-74-rebuild.html

Of course, when I read it the first time, I understood it that way, too. They killed him for the warp technology only to discover, to their dismay, that there were space monsters that made it useless. However, you can reread it now and see how none of their words directly contradict the idea that they already knew about the space monsters. Instead, they either couldn't pass up on the warp technology for other reasons ("useless to keep but too wasteful to let pass"), or wanted to keep it in their hands to prevent it from being used against them ("that could threaten them").

    ...

Ofc, while it's pretty easy to resolve this seeming contradiction, that same chapter has them directly claiming they assassinated him for the warp technology, when it's later revealed that he had to be killed for spying on their secret. So one contradiction gives way to a different one. My best explanation for that is simply that he was (supposedly) assassinated for both reasons?

One thing to remember is that they're not ACTUALLY alone during those meetings. They always had servants or a close aide with them who will be taking care of the technical process after they get the tech. My impression is that they try to avoid even talking about what goes on at the North Pole, so they make up a cover story and force themselves to talk about it as if that's the truth in order to avoid leaking the secret of the Noth Pole.

And I assume they want "the existence of a secret on the North Pole" to be a secret as well. Seeing how the Lords have only ever talked about the North Pole after Su Xue Er was already there, while the only other person to even mention there being a secret is Xue Er's father, who was a member of the mainline.

I'm guessing she takes her time creating intricate props and scenery as well as practice acting to scare her heirs when they go meet her . If she's that old, i can't really see her doing much of anything daily.

Wellp, so much for her reacting to the book. And now the girl is off to explore another world - GQS will no doubt be notified she has disappeared on his end, unless he somehow completely forgot that obvious half of this failsafe and the IG just doesn't flipping notice. Wonder what his reaction will be.

This unexpected transportation is interesting, I suppose. But ultimately, I feel like...

The neverending saga of "just read the damn book" continues!

I wonder if the book she got back was the same one the snake took.

As a fourth stage wind elementalist, shouldn't she be able to fly, even without the MC's help?
