Discussion Would You Count Desolate Era as a Modern Day Novel? Read Before Answering the Poll Plz

We should all remember in the beginning of DE, the MC was a modern day youth who earned money from stocks and eventually donated it to charity. After death, he kept his memories and at no time does he travel into the past. The MC also mentions earth on rare occasions. Thoughts?

Consider we aren't talking about "modern day gadgets" but "modern day time" as in concurrent with the flow of time we have

i think of modern day as in it has technologies that we have and such but the world that all of DE happens in does not, no cars,phones, computers, or guns

 

Seeing as how it's only mentioned in passing here and there I think it's easier, smarter and better to just classify it as a non modern day novel.

 

with that logic all transmigrated/reincarnation/reborn etc novels are considered as "modern day" novels =.=

It has romance in it too, but that doesn't make it a romance novel...

 

In some novels the MC would bring his creations into the world and they would be mass produced. In that situation, would it count as modern?

Of course, but because it holds some elements of romance, would it not receive a romance tag?

 

tbh i really like novels with fantasy element, the ones that focus on modern aspects are usually 90% racist to the point of wanting to vomit blood. Also JN kept thinking about earth but never went himself to see his old parents and perhaps help them out or properly cut off karma with them or something like it is usually done in xianxia

By the same logic you would have to count nearly every transmigration plot as modern fantasy, it simply don't count if the modern setting isn't actually used.

 

But the story does not take place in modern day...does it...

 

a tag, yes...but still not a romance novel
Using that logic any novel tagged as action is an action novel even if the action scenes is once every few dozens chapter

 

It's a futuristic novel since hundreds of years have passed ever since he died and this is not counting the amount of time passed when he was on the underworld which from what I remember have the flow of time going much faster than in the "regular" worlds.

 

just because MC bring high-tech invention from his world, it doesn't mean the underdeveloped world would become modern.

 

Nope, Desolate Era is a xianxia that takes place in the Three Realms mythological world.

 

then all novels should have romance tag since how would humans be born w/o lots of different couples~ that is romance in itself~ actually they should be having sex in the background too so it should be tagged smut too~

 

Modern = recent therefore even if the era does not have technology, it is still considered modern because it would be same time era as Earth with technology. They have different type of "computer" in desolate era. They have magic swords to move faster than a car so why need gas? And then they have a different way of gathering information. They also have their cultivation which is a type of energy so electricity is pretty much close to zero.

Then again, this does only apply to cultivators so i guess its half and half. Non-cultivators can be considered non-modern.
