Discussion Your feeling when reading raws (machine translation)

I read MTL before when I couldn't wait of translations.. I do get the idea but I couldn't sort it well in my mind? It feels like I'm missing some important?

 

I read raw from LNMTL, it's not realy hard if the novel already get manual translate for some phrase, like name or skill
But if you use GT for read raw, its hurt cause sometime GT translate character name

 

I read raws when there is no TL, or if I caught up to the latest TL-ed chapter.
I rather read raws and get a headache but improve on my Chinese than read MTL and ruin my brain...

I just couldn't stand it, MTL made me wanna puke blood!! D;

 

I wish I could read raws I tried mtl for 1-2 novels and I got a bad headache xD

After my experience, my personal take is, whoever reads MTL should seek psychiatric treatment.

i have read few chinese webnovels. it so happens chinese is hard to handle for MTL ! experience has mixed bag. it will depend on author. some write in a way that MTL does good job while in case of more literally inclined writers its bad. neual nerwork learning based MTL should make a dramatic improvement. hopefully we will have them in hand soon.

 

The first chinese novel that really forced me to machine translate was Zhan Long. Then being a dork that i am, started or tried studying chinese. I got up to 300 characters and realized this is too slow. So I made a program to assist me in reading. yeah i was fking addicted to reading chinese novels like crack that it actually FORCED me to program.

I can understand Chinese well enough to translate (and I did for a bit *cough*morrighansucks*cough*) so reading raws is the norm for me. My only problem with reading the raws is that 1) I can understand maybe only about 90% unless I'm actually paying attention compared to the 100% for English 2) reading the raws takes longer than reading English since I read the raws via Balabolka text-to-speech so reading a chapter in Chinese takes about 2-3 times longer than reading a chapter in English.

Though the benefit is that I don't have to worry about killing my brain cells in order to read MTL

 

Your Dao isn't strong enough. You need to make glossary for names/techniques/locations etc for mtl to work perfectly. Or you can read mtl on lnmtl.com where users contribute to glossary and make the translations bearable.

 

I'm MTLing "Sacred Ruins" by myself and I am getting no headaches. You just need to know how to properly mtl.

I kind of do it but more to learn a bit more about the language(have rudimentary knowledge of both Chinese and Japanese, don't recognize enough characters to even pretend to translate lol) and to rewrite it to something I don't mind reading in the future. Obviously 0 plans on releasing it to the public, but it's kind of nice to know that a few years down the road, all that mtl bullshit you waded through? resulted in something you don't mind reading yourself if you like the story enough.

If it's something I don't feel like rereading in the future, then I just drop trying to "failtranslate" it. No harm done to anyone in the end. except my brain cells

It totally depends on what novel I am trying to MTL. Chinese is pretty easy and understandable except the names are messed up. JP novels are too hard to understand via MTL so I don't even bother lol. KR novels, I've only tried reading one novel I purchased via google play books (as KR raws for it were impossible to access otherwise because its meant for 19+ readers) and it was very much readable, even better than chinese ones imo.

The more I read MTL, the more my brain gets wired to understand it I guess (I'm a very impatient person and I want to immediately know what happens to the novel lol). And well, english is not my first language anyway so I'm used to poor grammar and sometimes broken english.

 

how does one MTL properly, i would like to know

 

You need to make dictionary/glossary of important names, techniques, locations, etc.
Ex: 楚风- Chu Feng.

During translations the certain words are translated as per as your my dictionary/glossary.

Systranet offers personal dictionary function. Google Translator also offers but it's rather hectic. You can use fox replace or any add-on if you're using Google Translator.

The best way is to read on lnmtl.com where most series have a good amount of terms in glossary. The mtl there is bearable for most novels.
