So I've been thinking... what if my mother, an avid reader, wanted to delve into my realm of asian webnovels? Or my older friends (40+), my boyfriends aunt... people that generally have no knowledge of tropes, the culture, the general differences. What they know of Japan would probably be : sushi and weird gadgets and good cars. China: one child, a wall trump envies, and communism. Korea, they might even only think of N.Korea! These people don't think much of the beautiful far east, and their knowledge is even outdated on some parts.

But my mom does read a webnovel.. It's just that I made a compilation in ebook form then I let her read it.

My esteemed mother would accept my recommendation, read it thoroughly, discuss it with me seriously, then promptly tell me why I'm fucking retarded and how WNs are trash in a way so beautiful I'll even thank her afterwards.

This is why I don't like to talk books with my mother.

 

Chinese would be Douluo Dalu for story, ISSTH for cultivation.
Japanese is a bit hard to say as there aren't many that they would like, but Mahouka would still be the best as it's one of the few that a "normal" person could pick up and understand most of the novel.
Korean would be difficult as there's not really an entry-level novel for it as they are nearly all about VRMMORPGs, and they wouldn't understand it that easily. EER and LMS might be the best out of them.

Edit: Invisible Dragon could also be good first Chinese novel to help them appreciate all of the other good ones even more.

Oh. I once asked my Mom if she wants to read some novels in phone. She rejected me, so it's no to me （−＿−；）

 

I will always think of coiling dragon as a good transition novel. It tests out the waters while keeping many western elements and names.

 

Hard to fathom, really. My mother only reads when she's trying to get to sleep at night. It's always just some random mystery novel that she'll get through after four years what would take an avid reader 4 hours. I voted maybe because you forgot a no option (you putz), but I mean... I guess if a relative or friend wanted to read webnovels I'd link them some? It's not like you need to know the tropes in advance to be able to read them. As for the cultural stuff, just give them something translated skillfully first. Not one of those crappy translations where they keep a bunch of the weeaboo buzzwords as-is because it's "so kawaii".

 

My mom would only reprimanded me why am I reading R-18 stories but she will never stop me from reading since it improves my learning and reading skills lol xD
