This is what really bothered me about this whole stupid thing.
1. The war was not quick, it dragged on for years. They could have easily used politics to absorb it faster.
2. The war was not discreet, everyone knew about the war happening. It would have been far easier to use some political bullshit to mine it discreetly and in secret.

 

If they used politics it could have been leaked and other sects would want some too. They didn't want a war before the phoenix soul awakened.

EDIT: It was also partly arrogance.

EDIT 2: The author is also from China were politics does not have much back and forth because there is only one party. In the west, we are more individualistic but in China, they are more of a collective.

 

It would have been far less likely to leak out than if they do a huge massive war, including bribing all the other nations to not interfere
