You remind me of that arc in IRAS about that classic Chinese novel.

Try to read Memories of Emanon and the sequel, Wandering Emanon
The first one got historical vibe in it and I personally like it. Well, these two is not rly relevant to what You've asked but, give it a chance.

Edit: I remember a novel about a bookstore that tells us the tales of ancient books.. I forgot the title lol,
will edit later if I remember it.

Thanks for your suggestions. @SomeDude from the description and comments, I somehow get this feeling that I'd be hearing Sean Bean reading a narrative to me, with "Sogno di Volare" as background music.

"From the first stirrings of life beneath water... to the great beasts of the Stone Age... to man taking his first upright steps, you have come far. Now begins your greatest quest: from this early cradle of civilization on towards the stars."

And because this is a manga (plus I almost always play as a naval power)...

"The great wave of Buddhism follows you, Shikken of Japan, Hojo Tokimune. Your people truly understand what it is to practice balance, and even your finest samurai will be well-learned and spiritually apt. Be strong, embrace the divine wind, and you will reach enlightenment."
