I think it's depended on the dynasty. Cause the scene happened on palace drama that I watched. The emperor chose the new concubine that he wanted to sleep with. (That quilt wrap only happen with new virgin concubine aka the first time with emperor). Mamas and maid would do preparation (bathing etc). Wrapped the naked concubine with quilt and delivered her to emperor's palace.
This reminds me of a really good one called War Prisoner https://www.novelupdates.com/series/war-prisoner/ It’s in which a really good general of a country with a bad king that only cares bout sex that gets a captured as a war prisoner by another country with much better Emperor that is handsome rich and all the stuff that comes with a normal ML. MC gets treated badly at first and withstands torture as well and the ML and MC eventually get together, there is also a good dose of tragedy with good HE ending (and good sex)(*nosebleeed*)
