There is, though not entirely present time but it's modern times. It's "Strange life of a Cat". The people inside novel are truly act like "human being" without being forced characteristic. and yes it's slice of life
Actually this one is really nice. It's my favourite... everyone is nice and normal. Friends are international. Everyone in the cultivation world is one big family.
In addition to SoL, there are Action/Adventure/Comedy/Drama/Political/etc... I listed a few, and all of these genres don't need to have young master as villains to make good stories. In fact, there are some foreign movies which depict Chinese people as the kindest, most good-heart ones, such as Gravity or The Martian on top of my mind (arguably they may have bad plots).
I wanted to read a novel called 'Soaring of Galaxia' (before all this QI controvery), the nationalism in the first chapter was so upsetting that it was screaming 'you can only blame yourself for not being born as Chinese', I didn't read past the first chapter.
