Cleaning up tags on NU

agree. 1 or 2 tragic occurence in a 200+ chapter story isn't even enough to be worthy of tragedy tag. more like it only warranted some sort of tags. we even already hast 'tragic protagonist, tragic past. just need 1 or 2 more

i suggest removing them from most xianxia novel, leaving some like desolate era (because it has several tragic occurence throughout the story). i've been reading trough more than a dozen since the last few days, and frankly, none of them (so far) is truly tragic

 

169 titles, 16 of it being shonen-ai/yaoi and 1 shojo-ai. thats quite a lot actually.

 

for xianxia thing most from background duh like MC past is tragedy~
also do you really intend to definite tag? or just for this one (tragedy)

I definitly think Hidden Past and Mysterious past can be merged together. although the qualities are a bit different, they are really too similar and others can interpret it as the same thing.
past memories can fall into reincarnation.. but that can be up to debate.
past memories can also suggest other things, such as they have memories of before the novel took place (which post mcs do have >_>)
troubled past... should be rid of I'd say :\
I mean it really depends, but it could fall into different tags depending what's 'troubling' in the past

ah mage and magician it have been debate back then was it? some say it different same say it same~ while personally I think it kinda like author preference on what to call it~ kinda like~ wizard and arch mage for high level one(blame it from game influence)

Military: story focus or have large portion about war such as in Altina, Reincarnated Lord, and aldemarin on country level dispute(maybe there on smaller scale) ~ preparation, tactic and strategy, aftermath, army vs army

Army commanders and Military generals... could be said to be the same thing. Military generals after all "command an army" but we might not see them doing that in a novel.
I'd say rather keep military generals rather then army commanders as I feel it can be used in many more ways.

Mage = magicians, though each novel has different terms for it. Battle Mage can also be merged into it, and I feel that tag is only used for more specific novels.... so not too sure about it... Mage and magician can definitely be used, because they are rather similar.

Magic items, magic devices and magic tools could all be merged together. But if not, just magic devices and magic tools then. Because they are generally the same thing. Items gives a wider variety and range tho...

Sentient item and sentient weapon... weapon is more specific and item has a wider variety. It's up to debate really. To merge or keep them seperately.

Magic technology suggests there's magical technology in the world. Magical engineering suggests that in this novel people make magical devices. it's different. Can be kept seperate

Military, army and army building..
Army suggests there's armies in this novel... but I've seen and know there's other tags that this can be merged into. Army building should be kept, unless there's something similar/means the same thing but put in different words. Depends.

Personally I'm keeping in mind that people can add these tags, and that portion of the novel they are tagging, is so minor but it is there. Like lots of novels which have empires and countries in them have military and armies.

 

I do agree with the past few posts. But then again if there is a "mage" tag then subsequently there's a "Magic" tag. Do we honestly need the "mage" tag? When I think of magic there is bound to be magicians right?

 

i believe Female Lead Falls in Love First is a legit tag because it describes a romance situation in mostly shoujo/josei genre, where it is more common for males to falls in love first. although most of the novels you remove is male oriented, where the situation is even more common, few of them were female targeted, making it vital

 

My bad, but the problem is that nobody was actually using that tag properly. If that was a legitimate tag then a whole number of other novels besides those legitimate ones will fall under it. Needs a more distinct tag for it.

Also I am making a list of tags that I think needs to be removed. It'll be done soon

 

while i dont object it being remove from male oriented novels, the situation is an uncommon occurence in female oriented novels, so it should be kept, imho. (ex: Shinrei Tantei Yakumo)

imho, what we should be removing is, obvious, common sense, or repetitive/redundant tags. for examples;

- items,(from game element novel)

- clans, sects, strong male lead (from cultivation, chinese novels), keeping clan building, strong from start

- magic items, magic spell, sword (from Sword n magic-tagged novels), keeping cursed weapon, sentient items etc

- Beautiful , cute male/female, keeping only average joes, fat, ugly, disfigured, lolis

see? keeping the less common, and removing the standard, always-exist, obvious, normal occurences tag. i mean, 99% of movie, manga, anime, novel has obviously beautiful , cute male/female as the MC right? why would tag the thousands when we can seperate them the same by tagging the minorities?

It's definitely coming but I am keeping out the character traits for now because that's a list on its own T.T. Besides the redundant list is getting big on its own right now.

 

Okay it is time to do a massive purge of tags. I have created a list that I think that needs to be removed because of the following reasons:
1. The tag seemed too redundant to keep

2. Tags that won't be used by users to search for similar novels
3. There are similar tags that suite it better and cut down the number of tags
4. More of a spoiler if anything else
Not all tags I wanted remove is in this list because it proved too controversial to give a reasoning or I missed it. Each tag will have a short summary of why it should be removed. If you disagree with some of them, write them down and give a reason as to why it should be kept. This way we can have an open discussion.

@marine1corps I have decided to stop being lazy and take a look at tags. Let's begin with your list. I'll post some thoughts

Any sexual fetish tag should remain

"Ancient Fictional China"-This is a tag we should keep. It refers to a completely fictional/fantasy world that is highly based off of Ancient China. Guy Gavriel Kay's Under Heaven would fit with this tag. The other tag refers to a story set in actual Ancient China

"Aggressive Lover" This is different from just aggression as a personality trait. It implies that one is aggressive in a sexual connotation. Unsure if we should keep it, but it is different

Angst- is way too vague to mean anything. Delete it

Bishoujo, Bishounen, Black Belly- Definitely keep these. They are important tags to readers.

Conflicting Loyalties - In the overall scheme of things, not that big a spoiler. Usually this kind of thing is telegraphed by the author, so it's not a surprise

Death of Loved Ones- Not a super specific spoiler and it is an important tag for many readers.

Devil/Demon- I have always been of the opinion that these tags are redundant (even for the cases where technically they are different) One is good enough for me

Early Romance- Keep. People look for this tag

Emperor/empress- yeah that looks like something that should go under royalty

Flirting- Extremely vague. Might as well delete

Hacking/Hacker- does seem kinda redundant. Might as well delete

In-Laws- seems rather vague. might as well delete

Knowledge cheat- I do know people who look specifically for this kinda thing, but it's not huge. ask someone else for another opinion

Modern Xianxia- Yep looks to be unnecessary
