I think as long as you do softsub you should be fine. it's still illegal but tolerated as long as you don't post the video file.

Yep i know that, but even with the hardsub while it's more difficult is still possible to rip it off, so you should consider that and from a legal stand the hardsub are more risky

 

With shows like Ze Tian Ji, the fansub groups add the subtitle to the official youtube videos directly, so I am considering doing it that way
The owners of the dramas usually credit them in the video description
I was hoping to hear from someone who had experience doing that

I believe Chinese Donghua will become mainstream in a decade or so. Better established your position in the early game... Who knows you could be recruited by Chinese equivalent of Crunchyroll.... (Qidianroll?)

Well... Most CN "very good quality" webnovels started from WW and GT.
If you somehow release your "very good quality" Donghua translation, then potential viewers will choose our version more. Hence, your group name will become a house name like WW and GT. Perhaps people even won't watch until your group releases the sub.
Then again you can always take a commission, not only for Donghua but also for Chinese TV Drama. Rather than idiot GT translation, some fan might appreciate some professional help.

 

Previous anime fansubber here. Can confirm.

Since some sources I worked on were hardsubbed, I had to rip the subtitles to be able to translate them. Only the ripping part took me like 1.5 hours on average, I think? (I'm sure there are people far more efficient than me)

 

What did you use for ripping the subs?

 

It was custom made (50% for learning, 50% because I didn't find anything decent that time). A Python script that (1) launched mpv, and (2) watched the screenshots directory.

mpv would be configured to include the timestamp in the file name.

Then I watched the episode and I took a screenshot on every subtitle. For every new screenshot, the script would pass it through several ImageMagick steps to try to remove as much detail as possible and (try to) keep only the subs. Then the result of that was piped to Tesseract OCR. The output would be appended to an `.ass` file.

The manual screenshotting thing ensured me there would be neither false positives nor missing lines.

So, after 24 minutes (approximately) I had an `.ass` file with a timestamp in the middle of every subtitle line and a "guessed" text. After that I would spell check the lines with Aegisub, fix the wrong ones, and pass the subtitles file to the next person, who would do the timing and typesetting.

Of course the timing can be done simultaneously with the "checking" part, but we didn't have any need for release speed, so doing these steps sequentially wasn't a problem for us.

Still, someone I knew used another program. I don't remember its name, but it seemed simpler to use (and was for Windows). That's why I say it's likely that other people will be more efficient than me.

If you need to copy the entire sub there are simple ways now but i'm not sure because i was doing this in another life
