"So this is for people who don't know much about Qidian. It turns out that Wikipedia does not have anything of Qidian, so information I found was very limited (because I can't read Chinese, I had to search mainly in English).

Qidian a.k.a biggest Chinese online novel website is owned by Cloudary formerly known as Shanda Literature. Cloudary owns pretty much all big chinese online novel websites. But 2 years ago, Cloudary merged with Tencent and former Tencent Literature and owner of Cloudary became CEO of Yuewen group(China Reading Ltd.), Which means they are all owned by parent organization Tencent.

Now this almost unheard-of Tencent is a big scary shark. In 1998 it started by their messenger product later renamed as QQ (I think it is like main messenger app in china). First they were only selling virtual goods and advertising through their QQ messenger. Then it began to expand. They bought 2 mobile games from south korean game developer and made almost $2 billion profit. In 2008 they invested in Riot games and held 22% of its shares and by the end of 2015 Tencent owns all of Riot games. That means the biggest e-sport game League of Legends is owned by Tencent and it has about $1.5 billion yearly avenue. They didn't stop there and bought 40% of Epic games which made Unreal and Gears of war.

In case you didn't know Tencent also owns 5% share of Activision Blizzard (yes it is one company, they don't use full name but studio names when they make games. In other words, Warcraft and Call of Duty comes from same company but different studios). They bought more than 84.3% of Supercell (creator of Clash of Clans) for $8.6 billion.

Their reach does not end in gaming industry, they own exclusive right to broadcast of NBA and distribution of Sony, Warner Music Group and Universal Music Group in China. Just 2 moths ago Tencent purchased 5% stake in Tesla for $1.78 billion. These are just some investments they made internationally and I have almost no idea about their local, inland deals. Tencent Holdings has approximately $6 billion net income.

After almost 2 hours of amateur investigating I learned that Qidian is not just a web novel site. The parent organization have reaches all over the world. And they are truly ambitious group of people. Maybe WW clashing with Qidian won't end well assuming they have ginormous background.

I just wish they would stop trying to monopolize and let us read in peace."

Like I said before unless someone has a billion dollars they can't beat them.
If readers appreciate amateur English authors then their grip might not be so strong but I doubt it.
There is no translation site that can currently take on Tencent except a company like Amazon joins the fray

I got tired of so many people trying ro save the day. Mates it already happened, move on, wait until the final answer from the parties involved comes out and then speak. We have neither rights or worth in making a fuss about something that involves to companies, we are their market. But we cant change the way the world moves. So please stop spamming things and go to sleep.

Lol, not ever gonna happen. I don't even want to spend the time required it would take to find all the meat pies Disney has their hands in. Disney's label alone is a monster in the business world.

He did a remarkable job for an amateur.

But despite that, how large Tencent really is, isn't made clear enough.

Tencent is not only the largest holding company in all of Asia, it is number 6 on the list of most valuable companies in the world. It is worth over 300 billion dollars.

Even in the entire world, Tencent is a massive giant, and they're very interested in expanding outside of Asia, now that they have no real competition there.

Well, that's just what I heard tho. I don't deal with this shit, but my SO does, so I know a little bit.

Just saying most companies that end up destroying pseudo-monopolies of the past definitely didn't require billions of startup capital.

Just look at Yahoo and Google and both their developments over time. Facebook overtook many big social networks with 10s of millions of users that existed before them. Give me a few million, I could destroy them easy for sure.

And @123abc, Tencent throwing big money at things doesn't mean squat.

Long run return on investment is what matters. They're just diversifying into gaming and the ones that payed up excessively were probably because the sellers underestimated the drastic growth in mobile gaming over the last decade+. The rest (being relatively recent buys) can only be considered depending on their returns over time.

Their strategy of buying cash cows at their peak doesn't perform that well over decades though. But that's considering all sectors, maybe the gaming sector varies.

They already earn billions on others yet they cant even share a million or so of future income spread to teams of translators giving away FREE translation to others.

    Stop right there.
Why not earn 101 Million per week rather than 100 Million per week?
