Server Upgrade at 11PM PST

    The website ( http://www.novelupdates.com/ ) will be going down at 11PM PST for a server upgrade. I'm upgrading to the next plan. This process will take about one hour. The forum ( http://forum.novelupdates.com/ ) will still be up as it's on a different server so you can come chat here while waiting.

    If you're wondering why I'm upgrading, here's why:

    I'm been abusing the CPU for the longest time. I've also been getting automated CPU warnings from my host. I think they can be ignored but if the website feels a bit slow, I should probably just upgrade the server. The site is definitely not slow but if you compare it to the forums ( http://forum.novelupdates.com/ ), it's slow.

    There's also bad news though. As novelupdates.com grows, it's going to cost a lot for one person to handle so I need to put up some advertisements around the website. I won't go crazy with it. Just a few to help pay for hosting. If the advertisements bothers you or slows your computer down in anyway, you can just block it.

    If there's any extra money from the advertisements, I was hoping to hire a web developer to take on a project for me which will hopefully help grow novels even more. He/she can start it while I can finish it as I don't have time to take on another project. It's not cheap hiring a web developer. Yay for more novels if everything goes well?

    In case anyone is wondering, Web Developing is not my job. It's just a hobby (lol?).

    You could put up a donate box and when it reached the amount needed you could close it. Other than that thank you for all the work you have done so far. :)

    Woah, I hope you don't mean a full time web developer, because that'd be crazy expensive.

    No no, just to start the project lol. I'll finish it.

    Yeah they are expensive :mad:

    I was hoping advertisements would pay for the hosting. Depending on donations to keep the site up isn't good. Would I have to shut down my site if donations stop? :(

    No, I don't feel comfortable taking donations for that.

    If there's not enough money from the advertisements, I would just take on the project myself. It would just take longer as I cant devote much time to it :(

    I feel so sad but meh I'm sure the hour after it comes back up there will be millions of updates to the novels I'm reading. :)

    Keep up the good work. I love how you're taking this seriously to some degree.
    As for a donation box, it would be wise to try the advertisements first. The donations are only needed if the ads isn't meeting the end quota.
    You should also do what mangastream does and do something like this when people adblock the site.

    Do both? Less ads are always welcomed. But the previous idea still applies 'close donation box when the amount is reached'. This way you wouldn't be relying solely on donations

    Btw, I agree with the adds. It wasn't a big problem as some people made it to be, + donation made it so that only a few members are supporting the site. That's not really healthy.

    Hmm.. I feel like everyone forgot about the main site ... /sarcasm..
    in other news just means I gotta actually do stuff before 11pm.. ugh

    I think a mixture of ads and a donation box would be the way to go, considering most people use ad block.
