Eight-treasure rice is a famous dish from Jiangnan, consisting of glutinous rice, bean paste, jujube paste, preserved fruit, lotus nut, adlay, longan, white sugar, and leaf lard all steamed together. It is savoury and sweet, soft and sticky, and rich in texture. It is said that eight-treasure rice is connected with the "Eight Treasure Diagram" from ancient times, which includes eight objects representing good fortune: fish, harmony[1], chime stone, clapper boards, dragon gate, ganoderma, pine, and crane. The dish also has the connotation of "wealth amassing from eight directions", and during the Chinese New Year festival, people eat eight-treasure rice as a good omen for the year to come.​
