Art supplies can often be quite tricky as finding an innovative use for them can make all the difference in the impact you want to have on your audience.
The kneaded eraser or the putty rubber, as it is often called, is one of them. As its name suggests, this eraser can be kneaded into any shape and hence, is quite flexible in its use.
However, this eraser is not much useful in large-scale erasing. It can be used for precision erasing job. It is more suitable for subtractive drawing where the artist covers the paper with charcoal and then uses putty rubber to create images on it.
I have used kneaded eraser to create a little bit of negative space in oil pastel artworks by erasing off colour with it at desired places.
I have also used it to create a water colour-like smudge effect in oil pastel by putting layers of shades and then rubbing the upper layer off so that the underlying layer is revealed, looking a bit smudged.
I am sure this unique art supply can be used to create more innovative ideas.
Here is an artwork created by me where I used kneaded eraser. This picture was taken by using a crude camera and I made a mess with brightness/contrast so that the original soft look of shades is lost. Still, it may give an idea of the way I have used kneaded eraser in it.
This artwork was created using some oil pastels and a little bit of kneaded eraser. I have also made brief use of another tool about which I shall talk on another day.
