I was reading this manga a while back, and I ended up dropping it after a while... The reason being was that... The setting felt like it was pointless?
Like, the premise of the series was that the 2 MCs are 2 female teachers from a Japanese school... I think it was elementary school or something? I don't remember. Either way, that alone already means a lot of things.
First, they're adults old enough to have finished university and found a job, they should be mature and mindful of their own surroundings, far more than any teenager you commonly see in shoujo mangas.
Next, they're coworkers. While I never lived in Japan nor do I know any Japanese people, I'm fairly certain that relationships between coworkers are usually frowned upon over there.
Following that, they're both women, so they have to deal with prejudice that exist towards homosexual relationships. While I'm not sure how prejudice-heavy Japan is, the fact that Gay Marriage is still not legal there should be enough of a pointer.
And finally, they're teachers. They have a job to teach children and also need to serve as examples while also needing to make sure the children's parents are happy with what they're doing at their job. So they need to be extra wary of their behavior, not only because of the children, but also because of the children's parents. (which are usually a far bigger headache than the children themselves, mind you.)
Well... They feel as if they were teenagers, so the maturity is thrown out of the window.
Adults in the work force? The manga barely showed any teaching or any worry that a teacher would have, I think the first time a student appeared was in chapter 4 or something.
Co-workers dating? No worries, they didn't try hiding it and made it plain obvious to anyone that bothered to look. Also, both their bosses and co-workers were fully supportive of their relationship and even incentivized them to go out in a date while on the pretense of patrolling the surroundings... Because that's totally what a responsible adult should do.
Girl on girl relationship? Their co-workers not only approve of it, but also want to drag more people into yuri.
Worries of being a teacher and serving as example? Didn't I just say children barely appeared in this manga? That's not a worry at all, much less the children's parents.
So... Essentially... We have a manga with teachers that doesn't revolve around teaching.
A GL manga that doesn't revolve on the fact that they're both girls.
A manga with adults that feel like teenagers.
And a manga with co-workers that don't care about the fact that they are working together.
At this point what is left of the setting? It is... A generic GL manga without anything remarkable about it? Yeah, that's why I dropped it.
Would it really make for a different story if they were both teenager girls on the same school? Probably not... Or rather, it might make for a better story, since the flaws wouldn't be nearly as obvious.
I just don't get it. Why would you make a story setting if you have no plans of actually using it? What purpose does your setting serve if you'll just ignore all of it? It's just wasted space! >.<
That's it for today's Alice rant I guess, I don't have anything else to add... Just remember this when you're making a story I suppose? Your setting exists for a reason, make sure to use it. Don't go making isekai stories in which the isekai part is automatically forgotten or whatever.
