well I used a book of mnemotechnic but is an spanish one so most likely is a no go for you?, but there should be some in english too I guess..

Heyu i think i can use it, after all my native is Spanish, not English...., truth being told i learned English was here, reading novels.. XD

then look for Kana para Recordar, it offers you a little "story" for each character on both, hiragana and katakana to make it easy to keep in mind, IIRC the book even tell you to take breaks and all of that to help you assimilate the memories (I didn't need it though)
