@Westeller I've stopped reading long-form novels for a while now. I feel they take up way too much time and I tend to read them in either 1 or 2 sittings.
"Well, rather than ask what he's missing if he reads the novels, it'd be better to ask what he's missing by not reading them. Both the anime and manga are obviously trimmed down versions of the novels, with less content in every sense, not more."
I get what ya mean. Long novels are extremely time consuming. But for anime or manga that are adapted from those novels.. well.. I usually won't bother reading or watching a stripped down adaptation, even if it's pretty good. The same for western movies.
I'm a big believer of skipping the movie and going straight to the book.
Hmm, but doesn't each medium have differences between them that add things to it?
Though like you, I usually just go to the source material. I'm kind of reluctant to do that for To Aru cause of how long it is.
Well an anime adds a visual aspect to everything happening in a novel that normally you would have to imagine based on your own experiences and limited artwork. A manga does the same, though in a bit of a different way. If you mean things like that.. yeah. Every adaptation brings something to the table. It's not like they're pointless.
But the ability of adaptations to remain faithful to their source material is pitiful. Absolutely pitiful. And the things they skim over, skip entirely or randomly rewrite tend to be fairly significant.
I'm not saying Index's manga or anime are like that. Just generalizing.
