It shows partially as an easter egg of sort. Early in the last stage there's a microphone Corvo or Emily could use to address the city about the incoming whoopass. If they skip it and end the last boss then backtrack there they'll sing the first line of the drunken whaler.
Not really worth the trouble but it's nice to know.
