@Nahrenne not really. If you mean by life lesson, you wouldn't really know pleasure if there's no pain because there would be no comparison, vice versa. If you're talking about the other one, you'd first need to go through pain before pleasure whether you're a masochist or not.
As for needing to know pain in order to know pleasure...
What if the pain has numbed you to the point you don't know what pleasure is anymore?

What if, you are so desensitised to any kind of feeling, due to constantly being subjected to emotional/physical pain that you can't feel anything anymore?
What if the pain leaves you as a walking vessel of emptiness due to amount of pain you've endured for years and years and years?
...x...
Humans were not wired to be totally emotionless. Even if you say you're numb there is still a possibility that you can still feel pleasure even though not just as much as an ordinary person would get. And you said 'anymore' in your earlier post, it means you still felt pleasure along in your earlier life. [continue to next post]
Ah, btw, I wasn't wanting to get into a philosophical debate.
I was just showing that I don't only think about one aspect of something.
I'd rather not get into a debate about emotions.
How would you know you got numb if you haven't got anything to compare to numb. You wouldn't be able to explain anything to anyone about what you yourself felt if you haven't felt the two extremities. Even if you say you are numb, that's just an emotion bordering to pain that you are either denying or ignoring. [wait]
