I think it was the writer’s hamster. Other articles say that the perp fried his roommate’s hamster. Whether the hamster was dead at the time is unknown, but the judge made the assumption it was his rough handling of the hamster before frying it that killed it, and sentenced accordingly.
Cattle (depends on countries and religions of course, do include pigs, lambs, cows, horses maybe in some countries, etc..) are animals made with the intention to be eaten at some point, you can choose not to eat them but you will benefit from them or something they produce like wool or getting rid of some garbage in the case of pigs or sell them to someone else to eat them
Hamsters, cats,... well, animals that are meant to be pets can't be eaten because a pet becomes a part of your family at some point (of course people's intentions and what they do in their families away from societies eyes is something we don't know and no one will know if something immoral or bad happens if no one says anything about it, but if someone does then it is punishable)
