To be treated with vitriol simply for enjoying a particular fictional genre... still won't side with them but will treat them and my fellow men more kindly in the future.
I hv always been critical of the harem genre but in my defense, my views only extended to the genre and not to its readers. I've heard them complain of being judged unfairly for their tastes but mostly dismissed it... until today
No, but at the same time I believe it's better to talk about it. Harem genre certainly has it's problems too and isn't above criticism. However, I agree with you that stereotyping men and women is wrong. We are all individuals.
Ofc, I too believe the same. Criticizing a genre is completely fine but imputations on the characters of readers based on their tastes and nothing else is totally unacceptable. Same for authors; just because an author cannot write good female characters doesn't not mean he's a so called 'incel'.
I can't talk on behalf of someone else so I can only hope that this will evolve to a discussion with them. I hope this will lead to conversation as they clearly had bad experience and I wish they'll have a better experience in the future. When I criticize, it's not about readers, it's the novels or genres/tags/characters/plots etc.
