Personal opinion? Trick or treating would be perfectly fine and acceptable if everyone was practicing basic safety - being vaccinated when possible, wearing masks regardless, social distancing, and following the CDC's recommendations regarding candy handling.
In reality, absolutely none of that will be done. Kids will not be vaccinated (even at an old enough age), not be wearing masks, not even be trying to distance themselves, and people handing out candy will not even attempt to do it any differently.
It's a risk. Parents will have to decide for themselves if trick-or-treating is an important enough holiday tradition to risk the health and safety of their children. ... That said, I think it's fair to *presume* that anyone handing out candy is aware of the risk *to themselves* and making an informed decision of their own.
... In terms of morality, and social responsibility, the entire holiday is unnecessary, and celebrating it in that specific way is extremely so. It's reckless and potentially harmful, and there's really little in its favor save tradition and possibly disappointed children.
