Here some do it some not.

What does raising hand over heart mean?

I'm not really sure, but I know I did it for awhile at school. Sort of why I think it's weird.

that's the custom.

During a rendition of the national anthem:
(1) when the flag is displayed:
(A) all present except those in uniform should stand at attention facing the flag with the right hand over the heart;
(B) men not in uniform should remove their headdress with their right hand and hold the headdress at the left shoulder, the hand being over the heart; and

(C) individuals in uniform should give the military salute at the first note of the anthem and maintain that position until the last note; and
(2) when the flag is not displayed, all present should face toward the music and act, in the same manner, they would if the flag were displayed.

sort of like holding the country (and the love for it) in your heart, wasn't it?

Sounds like something only an army would do.

they instill patriotism in schools here, so all school children would be required to do them (?)

its kinda obligatory for the school kids in some other countries

Here? Is just obligatory to stand up. We still have that small amount of respect towards the country. in rest as how to hold your hands is not really in depth

well I guess its odd for me cause I havent done any of those sort of things in awhile...

So just unused to it.
