Full Metal Fumoffu [more like spin off comedy]and Full Metal Panic - About a guy assigned to protect a girl who has some sort of special powers [ i can't explain well] Full Metal Alchemist [there's 2 versions, the 2nd version is brotherhood] - they have somewhat different paths to the story and different ending]- About a boy and his brother who looks for the a way to turn themselves back to normal [can be a bit bloody] Sakamoto desu ga? - About a guy who always manages to make himself look cool despite all the pranks people pull on him due to jealousy One Piece - About Luffy and his pirate crew on the journey to become a pirate king [ VERY LONG...tho i love it some people do not like the sheer length of the anime ...700+ episodes] There's a few more but i can't think of them right this minute and wall of text is a no no.

Bleach Naruto One piece Dragon ball Fairy tail Gundam series Pokemon Digimon Mainstreem titles are the most save. The beginner anime that even the normals can enjoy. Not something depressing or something complicated. Basically a shounen series.
Amagami SS - Male MC dates one of several girls each arc (fan service is minimal and realistic) Kokoro Connect - A group of oddballs undergo a series of "tests" (serious drama with realistic fan service) Anohana (i.e. The Flower We Saw That Day) - Drama of a group of friends dealing with the death of one of them (Drama and one cross dresser) His and Her Circumstances - Older high school love story (Drama with extremely little fan service if any). Infinite Reyvis - Students become trapped on an experimental spacecraft (Space warfare and drama).
anime with sports genre is also safe to watch-pretty sure the fan service is little major wild striker future gpx cyber formula slam dunk hajime no ippo baby steps prince of tennis eyeshield 21 one outs over drive etc.

I feel like this thread is turning into a list of everyone's favorites, since I wouldn't watch half of these in a public setting. Not because they're blatantly inappropriate, but just 'cos it's be kind of embarrassing with how out-there some of them are. But then again, I care about public image when I'm not sleep-deprived. So I don't usually watch anime or read manga in public (I still read LN's though, and play games on my laptop).
Azumanga Daioh is probably your safest bet. It's also funny. Chobits was one of Clamp's masterpiece. It's a sweet, engaging and funny love story, but beware the tear-jerkers. Gundam Seed if you want something more adult. It's not considered adult because it has sex, but because it has a heavy message in between all the giant robots and explosions. Patlabor is like Gundam, but it's not in space and is more family-friendly. It's about police mechas maintaining peace among misused construction mechas. Gatekeepers was a great 90s action anime with its own message. Dual is a great Evangelion clone. Its main theme is the ambiguity of choices. It gets points by being adorable and a damn sight funnier than Evangelion. It is often called Evangelion Light.
