So I am looking for novels where the setting is in which people fight each other with monsters and such,essentially a darker more serious pokemon. One element from pokemon that I wish to keep is that the mc does not regard his "pokemon" as tools but as companions. I also wish that the novels recommended have a element of the "trainer" also fighting with something like a cultivation that ties in with beasts and such. Essentially, I don't want the mc doing nothing but sprouting orders from a safe distance. If possible, no harem as well.

No the mc really care about his beasts Spoiler but some people in the story treat their beasts as tools and choose to change their beasts each time their cultivation reach a higher tier Spoiler the mc is cruel because of his killer training but only to human

Darker more serious Pokemon... how about checking out the Mecha Pokemon at Frame Wars? It's not really a story or anything, but it's a concept world construction where a mysterious substance known as terranium created by cosmic forces changed the ecosystem of earth giving birth to some crazy lifeforms called Hybrids that are based on pokemon. Again, it's not really a story or series. Just an art collective. But it's super interesting regardless.
