MC is a battle maniac. He loves battles of wits, and loves to test his strategies and maneuvers against others. He is most at home on his chess board, moving and manipulating his pieces. MC takes pride in his intelligence. He's very good, and he knows it. He has confidence with his intellect. He doesn't need to have any grand goals, and can have loads of vices. But he should love war; in all its various forms. He loves manipulating, scheming, strategising, moving his pieces. He gets high on the battlefield. There's no music like the sound of blood and iron, the crescendo of the soldiers screams and shouting. Their terror as the fall to his tactics. There's no greater pleasure for him than battle. In fact if he's a mercenary, he'll be recruited not by money or fame or anything of the like, but by the difficulty of the battle they can offer him. He may even offer his services to the weaker side for the challenge it would provide him. Though it is fine if he has goals as well. Antagonists aren't stupid. MC goes head to head with other capable tacticians. I prefer male MCs. I created this thread due to unending frustrations with Regis d'Auric. Bastian was my second favourite character with Latrielle as my favourite. The volume with Bastian was my best volume. Regis made me start desiring a tactician like the above.

yeah...alright, listen bro. i aint against anyone asking for suggestions. But you are asking for a novel that holds specific types of characters. Maybe you're fine with the novels we suggest not reaching ALL of the citeria you put. But, like, do you know how few GOOD novels there are being translated that match those criteria? Maybe they'd at least have one or two, exeptional one s perhaps having all of them, but even so they are a bit rare are they not? Most likely any of the ones a person suggests to you here are ones you would have already read. These kinda novels, with those aspects, that are well-written to boot, are the 1%. The rest are either of a different genre or are...well, shitty. I'm operating on the assumption that you only want suggestions regarding jap, korean or chinese novels. The kind you find here. But honestly, i would advise you to expands your horizons a bit and ask for some english novels too. Because there should be a lot more suggestions that meet your criteria if you include those types of novels.
Legend of Galactic Heroes. You might find it especially satisfying, because it has two main characters. One of them fits your criteria (genius, ambitious and knows it), the other is arguably the template for the 'brilliant but reluctant to fight' stereotype, like the aforementioned Regis. Unfortunately the novel is licensed in English, the first three volumes are on sale and the fourth is being released in June. There are 10 volumes in the Japanese release. Alternatively, you can go for the anime version, often cited as the longest OVA ever produced (110 episodes), one of the best anime series of all time and an example of late '80s and '90s animation. There are fan-translated subs available.
Mm, do you feel like the battle maniac and guts addict are essential parts or not? Because in No Game No Life , although there are not 'deaths' as everything is solved with games, Kuuhaku always comes up with a new way to blow your mind. They are addicted to games though.
