-Why you would give up on a story (this is not limited to literature) ?

*When you can no longer connect with the character inside the story...
it will be like chewing on something just because it was food and it was supposed to be eaten
(imagine eating inside log horizon before the manual cook method comes out)
*Put on hold for too long...
When the story you enjoy getting cliff-hanged and put on hold for who knows how long... (the hype dies out and your desire to read fades out)

-And if you have given up on one feel free to mention which one and why ;)

*MER, simply because I can't comply with the way the MC thinking, and morality reasons

-If you've never given up on any story why/how?

*ATG / Death March / OSO - you will never give up on a story as long as you enjoy reading it

The few times I've given up on a story was either because I disliked the choice the author had to kill off characters and or the story got dull. Unless I felt invested in the story then I would continue reading it. For example I stopped reading game thrones on book 4. As much as I loved the world and the story, just too many characters were killed or had shit done to them I didn't like. Several times I wanted to drop naruto, but felt I was to invested in the story to quit it. On the flip side bleach was in the same book, but the story just got even worse for me to continue it.

When the story gets too repetitive.

When the same sex love becomes too strong....don't get me wrong. I'm not homophobic. I don't mind reading shounenai or shoujoai, but I dislike Yuri/Yaoi. Pretty sure plenty of guys can't stand Yaoi but enjoy full blown Yuri. I don't like either of them.

When the MC becomes too OP that it isn't even funny anymore. Like Arifureta. And Shura's wrath. One of the reasons I stopped reading on Royalroadl was because there were too many stories where the VRMMORPG MC gets a powerful race/class for some random reason (the game godess found the player interesting, did a weird quest, blah blah blah) and then beat something head on even though 20 or more players of the same level couldn't.

I don't read stories where an normal, average looking guy manages to make a harem of top class bishoujos "accidently" just because the girls saw "how nice he is." Find this to hard to believe. It's like saying there's not a single good looking guy who has a nice personality. Sounds more like the author dislikes good lookers. At least make the MC have one amazing quality apart from kindness!!!!!

There is many reasons why i drop novels:
    - When the plot stagnates or goes on a neverending tangent.
    - The lack situational awareness by the MC, I don't mind it in a comedy, but not in a martial arts novel.
    - MC has to be a Badass all the time, This is more like the author is the character in the setting and has to show how good he is.
    - When the MC becomes one-dimensional.

Then due to age restrictions, the MC just becomes a cuckold to the group of girls. The ultimate friendzone story.

    Mad?

As for the topic. Sometimes i've just had enough, usually if it stagnates. I read other things and let 10-20+ chapters build up and then come back to it later once I get bored of something else. I only drop things permenantly if they are really boring or poorly written/translated or there is something I really can't agree with.

I absolutely can't stand lns with those wimpy japanese mcs. I tend to drop them after a few chapters (novels like Slave harem in another world or OSO)

I completely agree, it's happened to me several times already ~ It sucks when the novel begins with a great premise and then suddenly a you get a wimpy Japanese MC... Today for instance I sadly dropped Tsuki ga Michibuki; I held out for 56 chapters but it only got worse in the wimpy JP MC domain... sigh.
