Getting to know about other countries in ways like these are... a bit saddening. It's hard to think of the situation as a whole. But the knowledge are good to know. But the idea in (10:18) , in a way that was quite the eye opener and a WHOA moment.
I'm interested in what this may be but I can't currently watch the video, is there a transcribed version or a synopsis I could read?
Lemme take my time to try. It's mostly show than tell so this might be hard. Call it an interpretation. Remember, this are all taken from the video linked. 1. There are North Koreans children born in Japan, they have children school dedicated to these NK-born children. (Vox talks a bit about one of these school) 2. These children are educated of their 'home country' (ideologies, culture, etc) even though they never step foot in their own country. (a bit sad when I hear this, feels conflicting) 3. During the war, Koreans went to Japan. But after the war, not all the Koreans went back, there was about 600,000 Koreans still staying in Japan (statement by Vox) 4. Now there is this North Korea bubble in Japan, a Korean community in Japan financed by North Korea where the bubble(network) has their own way of gaining finance in Japan through schools, bank and gambling parlor and send the money back to NK. 5. But this ended due to North Korea doing bad stuff. Kidnap Japanese. This blew up and made the Japanese hate Koreans. Then the nuclear stuff by NK added fuel to hate. 6. Now, the Korean school in Japan become target of conflict. 7. Now I quote the video : "What if they built an Osama bin Laden Memorial School in US? How would US feel?" ( I'm assuming he's referencing the Korean school in Japan, and how Japanese feel) 8. I'm taking a break someone else can continue I suppose. (stopped at 7:23) And do correct me if I'm wrong/misinterpret and missing important details.
This does make me curious though, if North Korea is so supportive of them, why aren't they moving to North-Korea as it's their safe haven. They would get all the things they want, saftey, being in their home country, being able to Korean all they want. I guess they just don't want to deal with shitty infrastructure, even worse oppression, poverty, starvation and all the other fun stuff. I can't really see this whole thing other than a petty move to disrupt relations and sow discord on the NK end and the Japanese took the bait.
the video is more about how such a complicated situation arose and does quite a good job explaining the details in a relatively unbiased fashion.
Oh, I quite agree he did a good job. Bit of a shame no officials commented but that is to be expected really.
It was a double faults anyway. If the Japan Empire didn't kidnap KR for man-power and sex slaves from the war then there won't be KR in Japan and if all the KR just went back to South or North Korea the moment they were free and not decided to stay in Japan cause they have no where else to go, then there won't be any KR to protest for in Japan land. If the NK didn't kidnap the Japanese, including children that was the cause for their deaths, then JP won't all be going for all this hate, then if the NK wasn't well.......one of the most Barbaric country for Human Rights in the world, then the World might be more Forgiving of them in their actions or something. Both NK and JP have their faults that lead to the current situation anyway. But still, this was quite a good video. This was a really good documentary.
Interesting, indeed. I'll have to watch it when I actually get the chance. Thanks for taking the time!
It's interesting how they're caught in this vicious cycle of discrimination, resistance, and refusal. I'd say in this situation that the Japanese government shouldn't affect the funding of these schools because of the problems that North Korea causes, but that would be just foolish as Japan also has its own interests, and in their own way, they're also expressing discontent. By no means do I approve of what the ultra-nationalist groups in Japan are doing or saying, and discrimination is a rather terrible thing, but...I really can't bring myself to feel sorry for the Chongryon in Japan. I can understand their plight, and I don't like the way that they are treated, both historically and presently, but I just can't sympathize. But seriously, Japan needs to get its shit together and start properly apologising for all those war atrocities.
This eye opening This is deeply moving Its so profound Its so irksome! Japan wars against Asia to dominate and in doing so dragged natives from their homeland escort them over as slaves and whores has to have 2 greater super powers involved who proceed to slice a once united country in half. The government under the Soviet control decides to do similar things that the Japanese did by kidnapping and sending in spies while testing out its military capabilities but suddenly Japan is on the side of righteousness?! Correct me if I'm wrong but this probably happened with in 20 yrs of each other right? Maybe 30? I can understand Japans following actions with the funding cuts and property seizing as reparations from the Korean school since its funded by the country that did all of that and they themselves paid no small part as well. But to forcibly try to remove people who grew up happily on the soil of the same country because you don't like what the North Korean government is doing is ridiculous. They are Japanese and they now can't identify properly between their two identities because of this! That being said what that school is doing is following generations of brainwashing... They are aware that North Korea has done bad things, that along with its benevolence came what is now their home land warring against their ancestral home in a game of mental tug of war. The thing is these kids don't know what Nationalism or Patriotism is all they know is there is people yelling at them on one side and another giving them hope. This whole thing about homeland, homeland, homeland.... UGHHH!!!!!!! You were born in Japan its fine being proud of your heritage and ethnicity but to blindly worship them is utterly ridiculous. Just because they funded your schooling? That is stupid, you lost way more by being close to them as the natives want you out but you aren't willing to stay... even though they are crying as they leave... these proud N.Koreans don't stay in N.Korea do they?
Like the video stated, the cycle of discrimination and nationalism is endless. Discrimination against Koreans only results in more backing for them from North Korea and a higher standard of loyalty from the Koreans for North Korea. If you think about it, the masses are just a bunch of children. One bullies another with glares and swipes. Another child then helps the victim every once in a while, fostering gratitude in the victim. The bully increases his harassment of the victim because of his great hatred for the other child. Such a simple matter can be summed up like this. The solution here is not hard rejection, but slow assimilation. Japan holds the advantage in almost every way except heritage. There is no need for acceptance. Just ignorance. Be mature and step back. How can the other child feed the gratitude of the victim if the victim is not a victim? A few years of forgetting the issue, of focusing on something more productive, could prove to solve an issue of decades. I live in the United States of America and originate from a South Korean heritage. (Listing this for bias purposes)
No wonder they're being harassed. 1) They were born in Japan. 2) North Korea launched missiles at Japan. 3) They still revere the great leader and not try to integrate into Japanese society (Kim Il Sung and Kim Jong Un) 4) They teach their children to be loyal to North Korea. 5) Is there any wonder they're being harassed? What's racist about this? It happened in the United States too.
