What does kangkung taste like? Is it similar to pea shoots?

Indonesia banned Reddit and Imgurl because of PORN.
But I don't see they ban Tumblr, Twitter, FB, etc...

It tastes like JUWAAT, nanodesu. You munch, and then happiness nodesu.

On a serious note. It tastes like a spinach without the weird taste from oxalic acid. It's also crunchy (as we mostly also eat the stalk).
Tastes best when stir-fried (I ACCEPT NO OTHER OPINION!!1!)

Also if I'm not wrong water spinach/kangkung is banned due to its intrunsive life that might endanger other native plant in america. It's pretty common to ban plant or animal from entering a country due to that reason.

You can grow kangkung in Texas, just need a exotic species permit.

What about fortune cookies? Are they banned too?

Tastes just like regular leaf vegetables. The stem is shaped like tube (like bamboo). I like it stir-fried with lots of cherry tomatoes and garlic. Also there's a superstition that said if you eat kangkung, you will feel sleepy.

Sounds like pea shoots... guess I won't be finding kangkung at Walmart then. No matter, as long as I can still buy my AR15 :D

Yeah, kangkung (or pak boong as I knew it) is pretty great because it grows just about everywhere, including areas of poor soil, so there was always a cheap, plentiful vegetable close at hand.

However, this also makes it very dangerous plant to introduce to new ecosystems. If you've been through certain parts of the US and seen the huge sections of forest destroyed by kudzu, I think the concern becomes reasonable.

I'm relatively sure the government doesn't have much interest in whether you eat it or not; other forms of morning glory have more LSD but are perfectly okay.

That would be an ideal solution wouldn't it :blobjoy:

Well, I think they even actually floated that idea for dealing with the Burmese Pythons.

On a more serious note, for those in the US, kudzu is edible. It's unfeasible to eat it to extinction, but if you encounter some in the woods, tear it out and take it with you.

For those in SEA, stick to buying kangkung from the market. If it's growing in the canal it probably has a lot of toxins in it...

Eh tobacco kills more people that all other illicit drugs combined, so why isnt that bamned? Oh thats right. The Government makes billions off the tax! Maybe there should be an excise tax on watercrest rather than banning it outright

I thought that it's because it's an invasive species?

You just need a permit to be able to grow and transport it in the US, because it is regarded as an invasive species. Southern USA has an infestation problem with the plant.

All the water spinach that you find in Asian supermarkets in the US are grown in Texas, California, or Florida. There are several hundred farms with legal permits registered, and an unknown amount of farms (probably a lot) with no permits.

Sale and consumption as a vegetable isn’t regulated in most states, and you can find it easily in just about every large Asian supermarket.

There was a brief period in the early 2000’s where there was a complete ban on Water Spinach in states like Florida when it first arose as a problem in terms of invasiveness. However, presently I don’t know of states that currently have a total “ban” on the plant. In most, it is fine to grow and transport with a permit.
