Some "One-piece" readers once said "The Journey matters more than the Goal/Destination".

But what if the above mentioned journey was endlessly/infinitely derailed? And said Goal/Destination becomes a forever dangling Mirage-like-Carrot?

Are you able to accept that several years(in real life) down the road (down the rabbit-hole?), the author decided on the following changes because "The Journey matters more than the Goal/Destination"?
    • MC and party derailed into several layers deep of endless side questing and "conveniently forgot about the Main Questline". (Read numerous negative reviews that the death of Isekai stories start with Sidequesting)
    • MC and party disappeared down the rabbit-hole/wormhole and ended up countless of continents, dimensions or multi-universes away from the correct path.
    • MC and party gave up on the Main quest and decide to start Sandbox exploration.
    • Too many innocent civilians/villagers/damsels-in-distress in need of help and countless cannon-fodder villains needed to be faceslapped.
    • MC and allies stuck in deadlock, war-of-attrition and/or eternal combat with Main Villain in an endless tug-of-war fashion.
    • MC, party and villains are stuck in endless bickering and monologuing every chapter.
    • Inverse Slice-of-Life: MC and party are stuck in endless cycle of trying to make ends meet, every chapter. Every time they earn a reward, Diabolus Ex Machina happens and bankrupts them and they have to get back to square one.
    • Total Depowerment and Power/Level-reset happened to MC and/or party.
    • Story becomes repetitive, cyclical, procedural.

This saying is older than the creator of One Piece.

Of course the journey is more important than the goal. It's like to not die of starvation. Eating matters more than being full. So yes, if you're doing a sidequest, like taking infinite numbers of pictures of the food instead of eating it, you'd die of starvation and will never achieve your goal; that is to satiate your hunger.

In conclusion, side quests will give you some flavors if it's not overdone. Sharing photos of your food on Instagram or something. Some like it, some hate it, some don't care.

To answer your question, if it's too much, no one can accept it. Moderation is key.

I agree with you that derailing from the main story kills isekai.

The journey only matters if it's not a repetitive nightmarish bullshit and they're actually learning something new, character development and world building-wise in their every sidequest because that's what the essence of all the side quests are, character development and world-building. The mc learns something new about himself, learns to forgive his past mistakes, they learn about supporting character's past, they help supporting character's problem, the party's bond gets stronger etc. etc. Now if it's just sidequests that just explains the MC's newly discovered power and the endless scenarios of arrogant young masters wanting to get face-slapped and the setting is almost just the same except with a different name and different positions of the buildings then at that point the novel is just utter bullshit.

    Plot-armor sure is thick.
Let's press "Diabolus Ex Machina" and "Total Depowerment/Power Reset" and "GM Banhammer" buttons on @R0.

The fact that you need to eat to be full means that eating is more important than being full.

    @R0, I see you're not into roleplaying.
Actually, a "certain MC" had the "Diabolus Ex Machina" and "Total Depowerment/Power Reset" and "GM Banhammer" buttons pressed on him, and ended up at Level -1, totally bankrupted and ended up malnutritioned and bedridden and had to be spoonfed by a loli.

One piece is just too long. Their journey are actually pretty short but the problem is they dragged their speech, fight, useless scenes..

To be philosophical is to fill an entire chapter with monologues.
