In China, fate applies to everyone. Sometimes, it appears as a person's birthdate and time of birth, but it can really show up in a ton of different ways. It's somewhat inseparable from fortune and depending on what any particular book is about, there can be opportunities for everyone.

The book I'm thinking about is a non-fantasy where fate acts in a very impersonal but palpable way. There are a ton of characters who are given opportunities that have the potential of changing their lives and the lives of the people around them: a woman suspects her father was murdered, a powerful man finds out that his brother intends to strip him of his authority, a young girl thinks someone she cares for is in danger. The protagonist may get the most opportunities but the whole book is shaped like this.

The heavens have always not given the MCs/authors face by looking down on them constantly.
Frankly, I think that's enough of a reason for them to hate it.
