Since the cuckoos' eggs mimic the hosts' (in size, pattern/colour and shape) the host birds often unwittingly raise the interloper. If the hosts recognize and reject the cuckoo egg, the cuckoo mother will retaliate by destroying their clutch, forcing them to accept her eggs in the future. Destroying the hosts' eggs also ensures the laying of a new batch by the host birds, with which the cuckoo may try her luck again (i.e., farming)! The cuckoo fledgling, if hatched first, will usually throw out the host's eggs to hog all the food. Even when it doesn't kill its foster siblings, it will beg and corner most of the food brought in by the foster parents, leaving their own young malnourished. Really nice, i knew about the whole dropping her damn egg into others' nest in order for them to raise her child and the whole child chick killing the siblings thing.
