Obviously you build a house... and then MAGIC!
If you guys don't know, the author, Legend of the Paladin, himself was interviewed a while ago. Here's the link to the article, if you can read Chinese.
For those who can't, here are the main elements of the interview translated.
1. Reason he “fell into this pit” was because others “stopped uploading chapters”
Gao Xinyong (Author’s real name) is thirty years old this year, and he has been writing web novels for nine years. He has been an avid reader since young, and while he was in university, he was addicted to web novels. He confessed that the reason he ‘fell into the pit (started writing novels)’ was because the authors of the webnovels he loved would always ‘stopped uploading chapters’. “After seeing the novels being discontinued after stopping at the exciting parts so many times, I felt absolutely agonized, and thought I might as well start writing one of my own.” On September of the year 2007, while he was still in the third year of Wenzhou University, he took up the pen name of ‘Legend of the Paladin’, and began writing serialized novels on Qidian.
Gao Xinyong’s stories are mostly urban fiction, and cultivation related. Interestingly, his first novel was called 《Ultimate Househusband from Another World》, and he was only about twenty years old back then. “I really like children. Back then, I saw an American movie, and the male lead was a househusband, which I thought was really interesting. Slowly, the story of a househusband and a bunch of children surfaced in my mind, so I wrote it down.”
With an upload speed of five to six thousand characters per day, Gao Xinyong began his serialization on Qidian, and received several good reviews. When he had written about twenty to thirty thousand characters, an editor of Qidian came knocking on his doorsteps.
2. 20,000+ RMB for his first pay check
When he received the mail from Qidian’s editor, Gao Xinyong had just returned to his dormitory after class. “I was so happy, I felt it was like a dream. I immediately contacted the editor, and had him send the contract documents.”
When he received the contract, Gao Xinyong read it repeatedly several times. “Truthfully speaking, I didn’t quite understand it back then. But I was really excited.” He remembered that the day he mailed the contract was coincidentally the day of a typhoon. A great storm brewed outside, and winds loudly blew. Gao Xinyong did not mind it in the slightest, as he braved the storm to visit the mail office to mail the contract.
When he was officially signed as an author, Gao Xinyong was elevated to VIP level on the site, and a fee had to be paid to read his subsequent chapters. A month later, he received his first pay check.
“The first pay check I received had about 20 thousand RMB, and I was especially surprised. The 10 thousand RMB among that sum was a reward for entering the monthly ticket ranking as a newbie, while the other 10 thousand RMB or so was the publishing fees for that month. For the very first time, I realized that I could actually use this to earn money.” From then on, Gao Xinyong fell deeper in love with writing novels.
《Ultimate Househusband from Another World》serialized for about a year or so before its completion, and on Qidian, it had accumulated over a million recommendation tickets, and over ten million hits. Very quickly, he began another new short original series, serializing his second novel 《Disciple of Various Gods》in the year 2009.
3. Bringing a notebook to write on is necessary even during driving lessons
After graduating from university, Gao Xinyong did not actually continue writing novels. His profession was accounting, and he started a company with his friends, the start-up costs were paid from his publishing fees. After stopping his pen for two years, he once again had the thought of writing novels in the year 2012. From the end of 2012 to the start of 2013, he wrote 《Overturning the Heavens》, a novel of about 30 thousand characters, which brought the attention of a book publisher in Taiwan, who had taken the initiative to contact him, and have it published in Taiwan.
Picking up his pen anew, Gao Xinyong said that he was calmer and more confident than before. “In the past, I did not know how to outline a bigger picture, and sometimes, I would leave behind many ‘plotholes’ in my novels. Now, I basically have a complete outline and main storyline for the novel. By following the main storyline, I can prevent incidents like being unable to link up subplots or forget to account for some matters.”
As a webnovel author, being ‘pushed for updates’ is a very common occurrence. “In the past, when I was taking driving lessons, while others were practicing their driving, I took out my notebook and noisily tapped on my keyboard. Presently, I’m maintaining two updates per day, and I’m trying my best not to stop updating. Even like this, there are still readers leaving down comments, saying they want to lock me in a small black room.” Gao Xinyong said while laughing.
Gao Xinyong has his own chat group for readers, and many readers would discuss the story elements in the group. Gao Xinyong pays attention to the group as well. “If there’s anyone who managed to guess my intentions, I would even change the story elements a little, to make the story more explosive.” Sometimes, when walking on the road, if he has a good idea, he would immediately write it down on his phone. The memo pad in his phone is filled with memos that only he can understand, and he would occasionally flip through it to find inspiration.Presently, his 《Cultivation Chat Group》is being serialized on Qidian, and it has already reached 3.9 million characters.
4. Piracy and Plagiarism are his biggest headaches
Though there is already a certain degree of standards on web literature, piracy and plagiarism are still widespread. Gao Xinyong says that piracy is something every webnovel author has encountered. “A large portion of webnovel authors will choose to sign contracts with their publishing platforms, and after their works have reached a certain number of chapters, readers will be required to pay fees to continue reading. The fees will be split between us and the platforms. This is our main source of income. However, a few piracy merchants will take the chapters which required fees, and directly paste on their own sites, luring readers to their sites to read. This creates a huge loss for us.” In regards to piracy, Gao Xinyong says that he presently do not have any ways to counter it.
Gao Xinyong has encountered situations where his works were plagiarized. One time, a fan sent a private message to him on the site, claiming that the plot in this particular novel was very similar to one of his works. After Gao Xinyong took a look at it, he discovered that not only the plot was the same, even the name of the protagonist was not changed. After he brought this up to a staff on the site, that person’s novel was taken down. Presently, the various genres of webnovels have already built comparatively complete systems of their own, as such, the plots in many works would have many similarities. The narratives of many novels and television serials now incorporate the strong points of different schools. “I look forward to even more young companions joining, opening up the holes in their brains, and creating even more interesting stories.”
Why Scrya, you went to that much effort! I didn't realize you liked this novel this much =O
Anyone else read that?

I don't think they're being translated.
But they're Qidian works, so who's going to translate it? Even CCG is so slow and behind? The good thing about Qidian novels is that their chapters are freaking short.
Hmm... @Scrya! Go! For the sake of spreading your lolico.... mpanionship.... translate the text on the manga, we can totally scanlate it with just the people on this thread if we get a cleaner, lol. Though most of the text there showed up in the first chapter of the novel.
