Worked at a pharmacy, 'tis true, it be like that. Spoiler I remember a few of the highest prices because I would get sticker shock just looking at the before-insurance price. For most medicines it was in the hundreds for several month supply. The absolute cheapest were around $20. For certain medicines it was $3,000 to $7,000 each (emergency allergy or diabetes injections). At the start of the pandemic I think some people panic-bought things in bulk, which caused me to see the highest price one by far. $22,000 for one order. But it was probably enough medicine for several years. Then there were the very expensive but less used stuff. I remember them because there were so few pills inside I would get scared that something went wrong and the bottle was empty. Those were several hundred dollars per pill, so there would usually only be 2 or 3 pills bought at a time. In general my coworkers would shake their heads at it, and when I asked why it's so high, they said it wasn't by choice, and not what the hospital wanted. They were probably referring to something I heard before, that the pharmaceutical companies mostly decide the prices, even though buyers can haggle it somewhat, it's usually still high due to that. I don't remember if I heard that part from a coworker or if I read it online.
