I'm kind of curious. Many people hate having a always-on mic in their home and condem those kinds of products. On the other hand, there are a lot of people who turned their home into a smart home and love it. I myself find it pretty neat and have multiple echo's at home and even wrote a few alexa skills to automate daily boring stuff. Just yesterday I finished my recent project of integrating NU for voice assistants and would like to know if there is enougth interrest to go the extra mile to polish it for a public release.
A lot of people don't realize their laptops Mics are always on. Hence why first thing I do when I get a laptop is shut off the mic. I really haven't found much use for a voice assistant. I'm kind of neutral on the topic. Obviously I think there should be privacy aspects addressed and some sort of standard, but otherwise as I'm not totally paranoid either.
@Inv Yea, totally understand the not much use part. The functionality is pretty lacking. I'm still waiting for the day where I can say pretty much any command and it will be executed.
I don't use such thing. Don't know how don't why need to. Call me old school, i like typing on a keypad more.
I dont think i will ever have a voice assistant. Even right now without va, some apps managed to listen to my conversation and spam me related ads... Imagine having a va everywhere, they will spam me diarhea medicine when they hear me farted in my shitter if they can....
I don't really need a voice assistant. All I want to do can be done with keybord and mice and that is more powerful than a voice assistant.
Right, if it does the dishes for me then sure. I mean you really need a smart home for it to be useful. Voice assistants are a bit ahead of their time. Once everything becomes electronic and smart, then sure I'll bite. Until then well. I was one of the first people with a touch screen laptop, back before most people even had a tablet. It was a nice thing to show off but was completely useless.
So for the people wondering what those things can do. Right now every morning my echo sends me the latest chapters onto my e-reader so I can read them on the train. Gives me feedback on various GitHub Repositories I manage. Playes back the news in 100 seconds. Turns on the kitchen lights and the water heater for the tea. When I come home form work/university turns on the heater, manages my christmas lights, gives me feedback on the solar panals I've installed, reads info on the mining hardware I have running and reads the statistics on aws services I have running. That being said, all of this was requiered a serious investment of money and time.
haaaa. . . human and their own laziness. . . . whyyyy . . . . . and in some places even if they work 20hrs a day. . . their livelihood never gets bettwr and only becomes worst. . . . haaaaaaa i want to be an immortal. . .
Not for me. I think the little things aren't exactly nice, but they're still things to do. Turn the lights on, check the weather, change the air conditioning settings, whatever it is. The progression from even 30 or so years to today is already insane, I don't think we need things that do everything. People will start to think that turning a light switch on is a chore.
I don't touch any non-FOSS technology, eww. Either way, wouldn't have a use-case for it. Call me when I can tell a 3D printing oven/cookery too make good food from upstairs, and it updates me on the progress. Or maybe in 10 years, I can order it 2 do shit like, 'Get my motorbike warmed up'. - Although, realistically this should be doable without that shit. Could only see me getting it too try and impress some girl by doing a - 'Set the room mode too :lets get it on', and it turns the music on, lights go pretty color, maybe stars in the ceiling. Or 'Set the room mode too : just a quicky', and it puts that starboy rapper on. But sounds like a waste.
Honestly? It seems completely useless. It barely saves any amount of time, and I can do all those things myself, the only use I can think for this kind of thing, is if I was too ill to not even get put of bed.
