    Chapter 1: Broken Engagement

“Lady Rose Blackwood, because of your sins in harassing the second prince’s fiance, the Holy Maiden of this kingdom, you shall face exile!”

The King’s threatening voice echoed through the large palace hall while the audience and officials quieted down to watch the drama. Three of the most gossiped youths in the kingdom were now gathered before the king to hear his decree. Among them were the talented and handsome Second Prince Gerrard, the Holy Maiden Lily Lockehart, and finally, the infamous Lady Rose Blackwood who was known for her sharp looks and willful character.

Upon hearing the King’s decree, Lady Rose could not control the rage brewing within her. Her breaths were ragged and her body trembled, but she forced herself to calm down. She finally looked upon the second prince with a determined gaze.

“Prince Gerrard, I’ve always been faithful to you. Was it wrong for me to protect what is mine? You’ve always been my fiance!”

The second prince looked at her coldly. She had never seen such alienation in his eyes before. He sneered, “Since when was I yours? Our engagement was clearly arranged by you and your father one-sidedly.” The Prince turned his gaze and looked affectionately at the girl in his arms. My heart only belongs to Lily! She is pure and kind, and unlike you, she would never hurt anyone!

Lily shyly looked up at the prince and blushed. The prince caressed her face tenderly before looking up at Rose with enmity.

“All you’ve ever done is bully her everyday! Don’t you know how despicable you are?!”

Rose bit her lip. She knew she was a despicable woman in the eyes of others, but the words hurt so much more when it came from his mouth. She gazed at the heartless prince...Since their childhood, she had always showered him with her deepest affections.
Yes, it was her one sided decision to propose having him for a fiance, but that was because she pitied him when the King did not favor him. In the past, Prince Gerrard was an illegitimate son who had to endure harsh training and punishments day by day, just to survive. But since the Blackwood family was influential during those days, Rose wanted to extend a helping hand to him by choosing him as a marriage partner out of the many qualified men in the kingdom. As she protected him in their childhood, she eventually fell in love with him.

When he was scarred from his training, she was there to dress his wounds. When the King locked him up for his disobedience, Rose would sneak up to his window to deliver food and play with him. And when his mother passed away, she was there to comfort him. Anyone who bullied him had to go through her, whether it be other children, or even officials. Her father, General Blackwood, had the luxury of covering for her since his place at leading the kingdom’s military was unmatched.

But everything changed when that Holy Maiden, Lily Lockehart appeared. How could she let a stranger come between them? Rose could not give up on Prince Gerard just like this.

“So I’m despicable?” Rose raised her voice unconsciously, as she stared angrily at the prince. “I’ve only done my part as your fiance!” She pointed at Lily in accusation. “She kept attending gatherings where she was never invited and always approached you! Ms. Lily certainly doesn’t know her place. I’m doing her a favor by teaching her the rules!

The prince protectively hugged Lily. “I had invited her as my friend to those occasions, and yet you teach her a lesson by hurting her?! Is that the way a proper noble girl would treat others?”

Rose glared at the weak woman who hid behind Prince Gerrard’s arms. If gazes could pierce, Rose would have burned a hole through Lily by now. “Then let’s switch places. If some man were to approach your ‘Lily, would you kindly give her away?”

Caught off guard by Rose’s questioning, Prince Gerrard shifted uncomfortably. He did not agree, nor did he deny.

Rose laughed. “See? It seems like you’re just the same as me. Most likely, you’d use some dirty means to keep others away. Like you are now”

“Rose, don’t you challenge my bottom line,” Prince Gerrard said through gritted teeth.

Lady Rose still insisted, “Likewise, I wouldn’t just let you be deceived and taken away by this shameless girl! How dare she try to rob someone else’s fiance!”

Lily buried her face into the prince’s chest. “Gerrard, I’m scared!”

“Don’t worry, it will all be over soon…” the prince patted her back in comfort. Rose looked at the affectionate couple with reluctance. A suffocating feeling spread over her chest, making her breaths more ragged. Even with her unstable physical state, her mind was still clear, and she asked,

“Tell me Prince Gerrard, how does teaching somebody the rules possibly lead to my exile? As far as I know, only treason can lead to such a serious punishment!”

At this time, a black guard approached the throne and announced urgently, “King, the Blackwood family’s head is nowhere to be found in their mansion!”

The King stood up in alarm. “What! Look for them! Search everywhere!”

Rose processed the scene before her eyes. She looked up at Gerrard, her eyes wide in disbelief. “Gerrard, what’s the meaning of this?”

Gerrard did not look her in the eye. He said in a low voice “Rose, I’m sorry, but your father left us no choice.

Rose had a bad hunch, but somewhere in her heart, she tried to suppress her worries. “What do you mean?” she managed to ask.

The prince finally looked at her with a complicated gaze and replied, “We’ve found evidence that your father had embezzled the kingdom’s treasury and led away other military officials to support the rebels.”

Rose’s hopes were shattered and her world suddenly seemed to collapse. She yelled at him anxiously “No! That can’t be true, my father is loyal to the king and the people!”

Earlier, the second prince shot her a warning glance, but he was too late--her words had essentially challenged the King’s judgement and decree, and she could not take them back.

The King laughed at her mockingly and looked down on her, “What a foolish girl, actually daring to question my orders. You don’t know the dealings of your father! Embezzling funds is shameful but rebelling against the king is unforgivable! As punishment, General Blackwood shall be sentenced to the death penalty!”

The King looked at her heartlessly, then turned to the second prince. “You know what to do.”

The prince nodded. He then looked at Rose and sighed. If one were to look closely, a subtle regret in his eyes could be seen.

“Guards, take her away!” Prince Gerrard commanded.

Rose struggled within their grasps. “Let go of me! There has to be a conspiracy here. Someone must have framed him!”

The King slammed his fist on the armrest loudly, causing the room to hush in silence. He looked down threateningly on the haggard girl. “Enough! If your father doesn’t return in ten days, I will make sure you take his place on the death row!”

A deep sense of despair threatened to overtake Rose. Her breaths were uneven and her vision blurred. Tears began to stream down her cheek despite the defiance in her eyes. She finally looked to the prince, him being her only hope at mercy. “Prince Gerard!”

Her former fiance could not look her in the eye. As the guards dragged Rose away, she could only hear a faint whisper from him. “I’m sorry.”

The crowd gossiped in hushed voices as they watched the once favored noble daughter being dragged away in chains.

“What a despicable woman. Looks like she’s getting retribution for bullying others.”

“Exactly. Her fiance doesn’t want her, and now her father has become a traitor who abandoned her.”

    “Such a pitiful woman.”

The nobility were always quick to change their mind based on one’s standing. Just the day before, these same women were praising Rose’s looks and status while criticizing Lily. Now they were all pointing at her with ill intent.

Every word stabbed at her heart. Abandoned, pitiful. As a proud woman, these were words that she always used on others, while never experiencing such taunts personally. Rose tried to ignore the shame in her heart, and instead, focused her gaze on Prince Gerrard. Unfortunately, he never bothered to look back. A crisis began to take root within. Is the prince really leaving me like this? Did father really abandon me?

As Rose struggled against the guard’s tight grasps, she anxiously looked to the prince. But for some reason, another face had caught her attention from the corner of her eye. It was Lily Lockehart, that pure Holy Maiden.

Lily smiled mockingly. Her lips mouthed a few words which was unnoticed by anyone except Rose. Although Lily made no sound, she knew exactly what the maiden said. “I won.”

Rose suddenly erupted with fierce anger. “YOU--!!”

The guards held her back firmly and closed the main doors before she could finish her words. Mournful cries resounded behind the door as the hall fell down in grave silence.

Omo omo omo. Glad to have checked this before sleeping! The story so far tho the usual trope of villainess, it seems that this time the story is straightforward. I can already see the potential of our MC getting stronger kya~ >< as for the white lotus, *cries at the corner* everything about her is so hateful rn and seems like she didn't wait for Nchapter to show her true face to the MC. Wanna do me a favor? Since im a sucker at loving this type of novel, when u update this can u poke me? Tehee~

Also imo the first sentence sounds good but will bothers me who is kinda of a perfectionist in reading peacefully. I think without the will the sentence will flow nicely.

Good work! *drops dead at me bed* :sushi_hide::sushi_help:

    Chapter 2: Prisoner

After Rose’s cries dissipated in the distance, King Charles leaned back comfortably in his chair and laughed. Although the old man was already in his sixties, there were barely any wrinkles on his forehead. He still had plenty of vigor and his aura was as intimidating as ever. The King casually held a goblet full of wine in his hands as he said thoughtfully, “She’s just as stubborn as her father.”

Prince Gerrard’s gaze lingered at the spot where the prideful girl once stood. He did not realize that his palms were covered in sweat from clenching his fist all this time.

A gentle touch pulled him away from his thoughts. “Prince Gerrard, are you worried for her?”

Realizing his unusual behavior, the young man loosened his fist and faced Lily with a dazzling smile. “Not at all. I just find her plight quite amusing. An unruly girl like her finally gets the ending she deserves.”

Noticing the maiden stare at him with doubts, Prince Gerrard lifted her chin and came near. When Lily saw his perfectly handsome face up close, with his green eyes, chiseled jaw, and prominent nose, her cheeks immediately dyed a noticeable red. The prince whispered in a low voice to her ear, “Why do you ask my lady, are you jealous?”

Lily smiled shyly and looked at her beloved prince, “No, not at all. I’m just worried since she used to be a good friend of yours.”

“She was just a former friend. Nothing more.”

The King frowned at his words. “People like them don’t deserve anyone’s affection.”

King Charles scrutinized the second prince, as if trying to read his mind. His second son spent much of his childhood in the Blackwood’s estate and treated Rose like a sister. Even Rose’s hot pursuit of him was known throughout the kingdom. It was only when the Holy Maiden appeared that Prince Gerrard began to distance himself from the family. Since then, this young man had been obedient to the King, never failing to live up to his wishes, unlike his disappointing First Son. Yes, Prince Gerrard was quite suitable for the throne, but the King couldn’t help but proceed cautiously.

The second prince was not favored in his youth due to his mother’s lowly roots; if this young man actually harbored ill intent beneath that innocent face…

King Charles finally opened his mouth, and said with a hint of warning, “Prince Gerrard, do you know what kinds of people i hate the most?”

The prince bowed before the king and said apologetically, “I’m afraid I am too incompetent to guess father’s wise mind. Please instruct this humble son.”

The King chuckled in amusement. “You’ve really learned how to flatter me...Very well, there are two kinds of people I despise..”

The King gave him a measuring gaze as he spoke, “The first kind is someone who lies to me.”

Despite the pressure of his father’s words, Second Prince Gerrard stood unfazed. “I understand father, it is the same with me.” His answer was quite perfect and his tone mild, making it difficult for the listener to discern if he was agreeing with the King, or actually mocking him. Only the prince himself knew his meaning.

King Charles eyes narrowed as he observed his son. Finding nothing unusual, he continued to speak, “The second kind I hate most...are those who question my authority.”

As he recalled the events of his last council, the King’s face twisted in anger and a fierce light was visible in his eyes. That was the last time he had seen General Blackwood. The man threatened to march away with his fellow generals if the King insisted on pursuing war with the demons.

“Those ungrateful men!” The King crushed the goblet in his hands, causing red wine to drip down his robes like blood. “Did they forget who established peace in this kingdom? And who it was who commanded the summoning for a holy maiden to help subdue the Demon Lord? If I did not exert my authority, this country would have long been wiped off the map by those fiends years ago!”

This time, the Holy Maiden Lily swelled in pride. She looked up at the King in admiration and praised, “Your Majesty, they just don’t understand your mercy and wisdom! If we send our priestesses to enlighten them, surely, they will turn their hearts and support you.”

The King’s eyes brightened at her words, “Yes, that would be a good plan!” He looked at the young maiden in appreciation. Not only was her abilities to control light magic unmatched, her beauty was also the only one of its kind within the kingdom; she had jet black hair, soft and youthful features, along with her pale skin. Even her ideas in solving several issues within the kingdom were unique and unheard of. Such a wise and unforgettable woman was a truly a symbol of power and hope for the kingdom.

    “Ms. Lily!”

    “Yes your majesty!” She replied.

The King gave her his command, “As the Holy Maiden, people will naturally look to you for hope. You shall carry out your duty and send priestesses to draw the civilian’s support as soon as possible.”

Lily smiled in excitement and did not forget to bow gracefully. “As you wish, Your Highness.”

The King nodded in approval. “At the same time, we should get rid of the source of rebellion. It’s time our kingdom unites itself in invading the demonic territory. We can’t let our kingdom be divided by some rebel’s idea of short-lived peace.”

At this time, he looked down upon the second prince with a sharp eye. “Prince Gerrard!”

    “Yes father.” he responded dutifully.

“I leave the task of searching for General Blackwood to you. I trust you won’t be held back by your sentiments towards him.”

Under the King’s watchful eye, the prince knelt on one knee and bowed to the King. “I will carry out father’s will without fail! I promise that my past friendship with him will not be a hindrance. In fact, it may become an advantage in capturing him.”

The King finally laughed with a good mood. “What a smart child! I have high hopes for you. Don’t disappoint me, like your brother.”

    ...

    Castle Prison, deepest level.

Rose resisted the guard’s clutches and screamed loudly, causing the usually silent prison tower to suddenly burst with liveliness. What would have been the job of two palace guards became a task for a whole group of guards--since Lady Rose was especially gifted with ice magic, they had to utilize an elemental suppressor to finally subdue her abilities.

Unfortunately, one or two guards could not avoid getting frostbites from her lashings, and had to be sent straight to the palace physicians for healing.

CLANG! The cell door opened, revealing a completely dark interior.

“Let me go! I can walk in myself!” Rose insisted. She shook off their arms and glared at her escorts threateningly before walking in the cell with her chin held up high. Even if they threw her in the deepest pit, there was no way she was giving up her pride.

“Hmph! No one here knows how to treat a lady!”

The guards squinted at her with dissatisfaction before shutting the cell loudly. Since they didn’t bother to burn the only torch in the room, the cell was left completely devoid of light. Lady Rose looked around nervously at this unfamiliar environment. This was the first time she was left alone in the dark, all by herself.

Back in her mansion, she always had maidservants to watch over her. In order to ease her loneliness, she had a habit of constantly hosting tea parties and gatherings. Decorations, lights, glittery jewels, all of these things brightened up her life; there was never a moment when she was by herself. Perhaps that was why Rose was attracted to the second prince who was the exact opposite of her--at that time, the girl was determined to pull the gloomy child into her bright world.

But now everything before her was bleak and uncertain. Without her family and friends, and especially being ignored by her own fiance, Rose thought her life couldn’t get any worse, until she ended up in this cell.

As she realized her situation, a primal kind of fear began to creep into her very heart. “Hello?” she exclaimed..'Hello, hello, hello…' Only the erie echoes of her voice resounded in response. Panic began to fill Rose’ mind. This time, she experienced utter desolation and despair.

With nothing in sight but darkness, Rose’s other senses began to sharpen; the air was cold and moist to the touch; her heartbeat seemed to beat so loud that she could hear it in her eardrum; she could smell a sweaty stench in the air intermingled with...a bloody taste!

The girl trembled in fear! ‘Did somebody die in here?’ As she swallowed nervously, she suddenly realized an unusual fact--aside from her own breath, there was another sound of breathing within the room! It was much more subtle, but it was definitely there!

‘Is there a killer in here?’ Since this was the deepest prison, this was totally possible. Perhaps the kingdom’s most dangerous murderer was trapped here with her. The girl exclaimed nervously, “Whoever you are, you better watch out! I’m an A-class ice wielder!”

The strange snicker suddenly echoed through the darkness. A low and raspy voice resounded through the air, “Nobody in this deep dungeon would have their elemental powers unsealed, not even you!”

As Rose backed off nervously, her foot was caught against something hard, causing her to trip. She close her eyes tightly, expecting to land on the cold, hard ground. Unexpectedly, she fell into a firm pair of arms and soon enough, a manly scent of sweat and blood overwhelmed her senses. Her palm had landed on a firm abdomen…’six packs’ she thought unconsciously as she felt those muscles with her hands. But then realizing that she fell into a man’s arms, Rose immediately panicked! She instinctively raised her hand to attack when an irritated voice pierced her ear,

“Will you calm down! I’m not going to eat you okay?!” The voice of a young man was much clearer this time, and his groans of pain were much more audible.

“Who are you?!” Rose asked in alarm. Whoever this man is, if he was in this much pain, he shouldn’t be a threat.

“Stupid! That’s none of your business--Ouuch! You ruthless woman!!” The young man covered his bleeding abdomen in gritted teeth. He never thought she’d be so vicious as to pinch his barely healing scar.

“You better tell me if you want live!” She threatened. “That’s retribution for trying to mess with me earlier!”

“Fine!” He said through gritted teeth. “It’s Derrick. Although you’re probably more familiar with my title as the First Prince, Derrick.”

It seems that it was a good idea to check my watched thread list before sleeping or else I would've missed this update :sweating_profusely: Also why do I have this nagging feeling that Gerrard planned all this? Or probably the stupid Lily. (The usual green tea bish would not have the brain for this hopefully) Though my inside was screaming that Derrick will be the ML why do I have a feeling he's not? :blobdizzy:Im also curicurious as to why he ended up in prison. Oh well time to go to sleep
