    • An Alt. History Earth is a story whose setting is on Earth and whose history is possibly different from ours or set in an alternative future. The setting in the story is still essentially Earth but a calamity may have occurred to change it into a unrecognizable world in the future or the history is different. Examples of this would be Mahouka koukou no rettousei where it is set in an alternate future where magic is discovered sometime in our modern era or To aru Majutsu no index where it is set in the modern era of Earth with an alternate history where magic and supernatural powers were present.
    • A different world is completely a different world. The planet may be flat. It could have 2 moons. It is entirely in a different dimension. A world in no way actually Earth. It is basically Narnia in the sense that it is not like Planet of the Apes where the protagonist learns that they were really on Earth all along. I don't need to give an example here because it is self explanatory. They may draw references and similarities from our Earth and its inspiration may come from Earth, but it is not Earth. Like how the world of Ice and Fire from George RR Martin's novels may have events that draw inspiration from history or have lands that are similar in name to Earthly places, but it is not actually Earth. Or how Zero no Tsukaima may have similarities to Earth, but it is not Earth.
The premise of this discussion is to talk about preference of settings. Do you prefer an Alternate History Earth or A completely different world untainted by Earth so as to allow the reader to fully immerse themselves in the fantasy of another world. Personally I prefer it to not be actually Earth or hint that it was really Earth all along. Same as how I prefer the protagonist to be completely of origin in the Otherworld and not be a reincarnation or traveler from Earth. Someone entirely from their fantasy setting and not have an outsider perspective.

I prefer parallel universe. Mainly because the author is capable of making countless different logics in the world and the author can also set the physics of that particular universe.

"Physics doesn't make sense? It's a different universe mate!"

Also, maybe it's also the reason why dense male lead has harem...

I prefer earth. Something that I can connect to. I would like to see what could have been different on earth in a parallel universe. It's good that it was the first option here. I think it's more fun if you can connect things and compare

I think alternate history has more potential to be interesting.

Having a fantasy story adhere to some real-world rules, while simultaneously having some absolutely ludicrous properties, is more interesting than explaining everything away with alternate universe rules. Trying to give the reader the impression that the events of the story could be possible is always a good thing.

Either can be quite excellent. Guy Gavriel Kay's Historical fantasy works are among my favorites. Yet I also really enjoy Malazan (my favorite series). It's about how well the setting is written, not the setting itself.

Except for game elements and xuanhuan-type stories. Those settings I believe are inherently flawed.

    Different earth,
Because magic is something normal over there and polygamy is normal if you are able to satisfy the need of your wife

    Alternate Earth.
The reasoning behind the existence of parallel worlds befuddles this one.

I would say both are great, but if you had to twist my arm kind of answer. I'd pick earth future. I have always love the whole Arthur mytho of the sleeping king returning. When in earths darkest moment he will appear and set things right.

I like what ifs, what if something changed in the history and what ramifications it could cause.

Sarcasm that happens to line up perfectly with the rest of your opinion post in this thread mostly consisting of serious replies.

Also, I don't see how telling me that most novels don't follow the laws of physics is saying anything at all. I already know a lot of novels are bad. What you're saying is that making up excuses to be bad is preferable to actually attempting to be not bad.
