Fate Zero is where you should start IMO. Good characters, good action, no shitty whiney main character and his harem Then Kaleid Liner Prisma Illya... cause its like a Magic Girl show. But really you should probably watch Fate/Stay Night to understand the character. If you want a Stay Night one, I think Unlimited Blade Works is the most worthy.
I would say play the eroge for the first route, watch unlimited blade works anime, read and watch fate zero, play fate ataraxia, then maybe the spinoff. If not enough time and want to get hooked up, watch fate zero or fate unlimited blade works first.
Its a good anime series, but its complicated to get into. The first anime isn't good so people don't recommend it, but its the only route for on of the heroines, the main one, out there so you just need to take it like a man if you have no intention of playing the VN. I would recommend watching them in order of release and not chronological order in story.
I'd only recommend Fate/Zero, just ignore the rest, not really worth it. Unlimited bladeworks might be okay'ish too, as for the rest; irrelevant.
Probably one of the best series out there. The first fate animes aren't that good, but the following ones like the movies (Heaven's feel) or anime done by Ufotable (Fate/Zero) are still the best out of all the action anime I've ever came across. The plot is also amazing, although a bit dark. Basically you aren't watching anime if you haven't watched it.

Play the game then read /watch the Zero. Fate Zero is good, but it is just something like funfic for the game which was made by Urobuchi Gen (he is genius of dark stories, google him) AND it spoil the large part of darkest route from the FSN (which don't have proper anime yet). DON'T WATCH OLD (2006 or something?) FSN ANIME NO MATTER WHAT - THIS JUST ONE BIG SPOILER PIECE OF SHIT ANIME. UBW anime is good, but the game route still better and you can watch the anime later to see epic fight scenes with good quality animation. The story is different. Those are different routes from original game. The routes in visual novel usually have completely different story, but same characters and timeline. This is something like alternative stories within one timeline and universe. Alternative reality depended on choices of MC (and his choices controlled by player). Usually main choice is which girl to romance. In Heaven's Feel MC romance Sakura and in UBW he romance Rin. In original Fate route his choice would be Saber. In FSN most events are unique for each route.
