How old is the laptop and the specs? As generally these days, laptops arent made to really be able to be easily upgraded. generally its easier just to get a new one as you'd basically have to replace almost everything anyway to upgrade it.
They arent "modular" like PCs are, unless you got like a full custom laptop that's made so it can be upgraded.

That's what i was told when i needed to upgrade from my old laptop 18 months ago.

    2011 laptop huh.

Just get a new lappy instead. It's better than attempting to upgrade and all that hassle included.

As far as I know, most laptop can't be upgraded on some certain parts, only RAM that's still able too. You need to buy a new one if you really have to.

Obviously PC is a better choice if you want to use it in a long term

If you do want to upgrade, make sure the RAM DDR type is correct. and CPU's have a cap on max RAM, check that first.

some other things you can do, are switch SSD into the CD drive, check if the graphic or sound card can be easily taken out and in without damaging other components and then decide whether it's worth it to change them up.

Yeah laptops are a bit of a pain. You can upgrade the RAM but that’s not gonna do much as your going to be bottlenecked by your (what I assume to be) integrated GPU. Modern iGPUs are actually pretty good and can run allot of games but those older ones are beyond terrible at running any game. Long story short you can’t do much, maybe download a game streaming service? Not sure it would work with your laptop but you should look into it.

Clean the dust inside your laptop. Works on 9/10 of the times on old laptops that haven't been abused

Yeah, I don’t use them so I don’t know much about them but might look into Stadia, GeForce Now, or PlayStation Now. You can stream high end games from low end PCs. I think stadia even has a free tier.

Depends on the desktop environment, and please don't use Ubuntu. To controbuit to the fuck Canonical efforts. I think Grome2 or kde is good environment. If your good at GTK and GTK2 you can really setup anything you like, like window 10 desktop, windows 7 desktop.
Just don't use Ubuntu, as fuk canonical.
OH, and crossfire will not run well if you have amd graphics. Make sure you get the graphics card drivers, which can be a mess to set up.
Actually try fedora if your bad with debian, rummors says that fedora is easier.
But that intel chips missing many micro commands, so It might be a bit hard. Do that game support Linux?
