Tong Hua novels should be the first go to for historical tragic romances. Bu Bu Jing Xin, Ballad of the Desert, and Song in the Clouds are the ones to check out. They're all really good books and they're also properly historical as well: the first one takes place during the reign of Kangxi of the Qing dynasty while the other two are the first and second books in a series that is set in the Han dynasty. Of these "Bu Bu Jing Xin" would already be one of the saddest books out there, but "Song in the Clouds" is even mores - it's probably the saddest book I've ever read.

These books have also been adapted as TV shows. The first two are pretty great but the "Song in the Clouds" adaptation is really bad.
